Town Talk: Spring turkey dates and city cleanup plans

Spring gobbler season runs April 21 to 29 with a one gobbler limit in Comanche Taylor Brown Callahan Coleman Eastland Nolan Runnels Shackelford and Throckmorton counties. De Leon plans a two week cleanup April 30 to May 11 with north of Reynosa Street first week and south second week.

Escaped Prisoners Returned to County Jail

Mike Williams and Luis Gonzales, both from De Leon, overpowered a jailer at 8 05 p m Friday night and escaped from Comanche County jail. Officials hunted them for over thirty hours before arresting Williams Saturday night and Gonzales early Sunday. Williams faced attempted capital murder charges. Gonzales was jailed on unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Both were denied bond and returned to the county jail awaiting grand jury action.

Hamilton Livestock Commission owners seek USDA hearing

Bob Wright and Roland Poe of Hamilton have filed for a U S Department of Agriculture hearing after being charged with weighing and record keeping violations under the Packers and Stockyards Act. They claim the hearing will prove their innocence and could lead to a cease and desist order or penalties if found at fault.

Scout Breakfast Thursday To Kick Off Drive

The Boy Scout drive in De Leon begins Thursday morning April 19 with a 7:00 a.m. breakfast at La Don's. Wayne Chambers chairs the drive aiding 38 Cub Scouts 26 Boy Scouts and 10 Explorer Post members in De Leon.

City Declares Two Week Clean Up in De Leon

The weeks of April 30 through May 11 are declared Clean Up Week in De Leon. City Council approved at the April 10 meeting. North of Reynosa Street to be collected April 30 to May 4. south of Reynosa May 7 to 11. Residents urged to clean up and place items at curb for city pickup. Tree limbs should be four feet long for pickup.

Kittens to Compete at Stephenville Regional Track Meet

Seven Kitten track team members will compete in the regional meet at Stephenville on April 20 and 21. Field events start 4:00 p.m. Friday with prelims at 7:00 p.m. Finals set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday. The 440 yard relay team features Donna Boen, Christi Keith, Carolyn McKillip, Cindy Wilkerson. mile relay includes McKillip, Risa Duke, Tracie Barnes, Becky Ward. Keith competes in long jump. Wilkerson in triple jump, 100 yard dash, and 80 yard hurdles.

Bearcats District Track Meet Thursday at Cen-Tex Brownwood

The Bearcats and Cubcats compete in the district track meet on Thursday April 19 at Cen-Tex track Brownwood. Field events start 11 30 a m with running prelims at 3 p m for several sprints and hurdles. Finals begin 7 p m with awards at 9 30 p m. Sheriff Recaptures Escapees and Proctor Overdose Incident

The county sheriff's department recaptured two jail escapees this weekend and investigated an accidental overdose involving subscription medication and alcohol in a Proctor resident. Officers also linked a burglary at Proctor Lake on Saturday to two suspects arrested by Coleman County authorities and returned to Comanche County. The suspects allegedly stole soap and a blanket from the home.

First United Methodist Church hosts revival series in De Leon

The De Leon church begins a Sunday night revival Sun April 22 featuring Dr. Allen Lamar Cooper of SMU preached and taught on Revelation with guest Bible study. Singing led by Rev Claude Davison. children program led by Rev John Lukert. Nursery provided. Services 7 p.m. Sun Mon Tue Wed and 7 a.m. Mon Tue Wed. Coffee and doughnuts offered mornings. New Items Added to Comanche County Museum

The Comanche County Historical Museum offers Sunday hours 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. in summer. The museum in Comanche preserves county heritage with items donated from across the area. Residents are urged to loan or donate items, with slips available at the museum, and volunteers welcome. Artists Clara Bruton, Ona Dean Freeman, and others contribute paintings of local sites such as Pounds schoolhouse, De Leon drug store, Boyd Blacksmith Shop, Rock Bluff, and the Louis Echols gin. A notable new piece is a Whatzit donated by Lowery Easley, sparking public curiosity.

City Passes Animal Control Ordinance

The City of De Leon enacted an animal control ordinance requiring rabies vaccination and registration for dogs and cats, with two year licenses and identification tags. Unrestrained animals may be impounded by police, and violations carry up to a $200 fine after a 30 day enforcement lead time.
