Comanche County deputies stopped a car near Comanche searching for stolen money orders. Sammy Oliver 38 faces Fort Worth attempted murder charges from 1983. Barbara Bullard 53 and husband Raymond arrested with eight stolen money orders found. bonds set at 17000 and 105000 respectively. Oliver held in county jail. authorities note 160 money orders missing from Oklahoma post office.
A water safety sign funded by the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW was dedicated at Copperas Creek Park on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The group raised about 46,000 dollars for local rescue units, and produced 35 signs for lakes statewide. Attendees included De Leon and Comanche fire departments, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Civil Defense, the city of Comanche, the chamber, and Mrs. Sallie Glass, founder. The event honored John Glass on his 36th birthday and followed his 1975 drowning at Proctor Lake.
Lowell Pittman defeated Doyle Smith for Place 3 on the De Leon City Council in Saturday’s runoff, 230 votes to 140. The runoff followed an April 6 election where Pittman led with 226 to Smith 181 and incumbent Glenn Bruton 77, amid questions on state-law conflicts and ballot order procedures. Absentee voting occurred at City Hall, and a contest over ballot sequencing prompted a notice continued to Page 2.
At De Leon City Hall the Corriche County Kids Health and Safety Fair will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday April 20. The event features clowning balloons puppets nutritious snacks and many free booths and tests staffed by volunteers.
De Leon High School seniors.head to Austin for the University Interscholastic League Literary Meet set for April 23 to 27. Douglas Conklin earned first place in Journalism Feature Writing at Tarleton State University during the Region II Conference AA literary contest, while Melinda Johnson placed second in Prose Interpretation. Douglas is the son of Ron and Mrs. Conklin, Melinda the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson.
The Junior High District 14 AA Track Meet for 7th and 8th grade boys and girls has moved from Saturday April 27 to Thursday April 25. Competition begins at 10 a.m. in McGregor.
Kindergarten pre-registration runs Wednesday and Thursday for children who will be five before September 1, 1985. Parents should bring birth certificates and immunization records. Registration is in the P.E. Room beside the Elementary School office from 8 30 a.m. to 3 00 p.m. on both days.
The Comanche County Retired Teachers Association sponsors a 55 Alive course taught by W A Bill Reeves. The class runs April 29 and 30 from 1 to 5 p m in the Fellowship Hall, First Baptist Church. No test. a certificate is issued on completion. Call 893-6604 for details.
De Leon Bearcats and Lady Bearcats will compete in the District 14 AA Track Meet at Glen Rose Thursday and Friday. Field events start 4:00 p.m. Thursday, prelims around 6:30 p.m., with finals Friday at 6:30. De Leon enters varsity boys and varsity girls only.
