Comanche County Telephone Co to Install Cross Country Toll Facilities

Comanche County Telephone Co announces a long distance expansion funded by a 305000 loan from the Rural Electrification Administration. About 100000 will go to a new toll design serving Newburg, Proctor, and Sidney with underground intra company toll lines and Direct Distance Dialing. The project includes 44 miles of toll route, new trunk lines, and network switching into area 915 and 817 by late 1971, with some delays for Newburg DDD equipment and Brownwood CAMA center upgrades.

4-H Members Off To District 8 Meet

About fifty Comanche County 4-H members and thirty adult leaders travel to Tarleton State College in Stephenville for the District 8 4-H contests on April 17. District Agents Annie Lucey Lane and John E Burleson will run the day’s events starting with an 8 45 a m assembly.

Rites Held For J. D. Tate

Jeff D. Tate longtime De Leon resident died April 6 in De Leon Hospital at 72 after a lengthy illness. He was born January 2, 1899, married to Jimmie Bell Watkins on July 18, 1920, and led a career at Farmers and Merchants Bank 27 years and later ran an International Harvester dealership. He served as City Commissioner and mayor in the 1930s, sat on the school board, and was a World War I veteran. Survived by wife, son Bill Tate, daughter Dolores Wickline, sisters Mittie Bryant and Alma Nell Swank, four grandsons, two granddaughters. Funeral April 8 at Higginbotham Funeral Home with Ministers Andy Hudson and Robert Bohannon. pallbearers listed.

Bill Wilkerson Wins Run-Off For City Commission Place I

Bill Wilkerson owner of DaNite Grocery was re elected to City Commission Place I in a close run off. He tallyed 131 votes to Heigh McGovern 12, a tight race with about 100 more voters than in the regular election. The run off occurred after Wilkerson failed to secure a majority over two rivals.

Public Library Open House at De Leon on April 18

The Shake Speare Club sponsors an open house from 2 to 4 p m Sunday April 18 at the renovated De Leon Public Library. Mrs. J H Grizzelle, longtime librarian, will be honored as the library expands hours to eight daily and adds air conditioning carpeting and a new typewriter with access to Texas State Inter Library Loan.

Texas Agricultural Commissioner John C White announced a machinery display of granular and liquid applicators at the De Leon Research Laboratory parking lot in De Leon from April 19 to 24. The display aims to help farmers compare equipment for applying granular and liquid materials and is open to the public during the week.

Old Time Fiddlers Contest Set for Desdemona Saturday

An Old Time Fiddlers Contest is scheduled for April 17 at Desdemona High School Building 11 miles north of De Leon at the intersection of state highway 16 and Farm Road 8. Three divisions 20 and down 21 through 60 61 and Up offer 165 dollars in prizes. Contest starts at 4 pm with finals at 8 pm. Food will be available. Sponsored by the Desdemona Community Center.
