The fourteenth Bearcat Relays will be held this Saturday, April 9, in De Leon featuring 18 high school teams and 17 junior high squads. New officers for PAR Country Club have been elected for 1983. W. B. Traweek of Dublin will serve as president, with John Gleaton of Comanche as vice president and Pat Eisenrich of De Leon as secretary treasurer.
Volunteer workers are needed at the new baseball field west of the Cross Timbers Health Clinic. Opportunities run all day each Saturday in April to prepare the field for the summer season starting May 3.
Crime Stoppers in Comanche County will meet next Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Comanche County Courthouse to discuss tips and safety efforts.
The De Leon Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will hold a General Membership Meeting on April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the F and M Bank Community Room. All members are urged to attend to discuss ideas promoting De Leon.
The Mighty Maroon Band traveled to Stephenville High School for the Region VII East Zone UIL concert and sightreading contest. Judges Bearden Harrell Phoede graded concert, while Gilligan Thaxton Kincaid led sightreading. Four of 19 bands earned I in both categories.
No rainfall for the week. Total rainfall for March at the Corps of Engineers Station on Lake Proctor was 4.34 inches, then to date 6.43 inches.
Tarleton State University hosts Region 11 U S S events with the UIL competition opening April 14 at 6 30 p m in Clyde H Wells Fine Arts Center. The program runs through April 15 with debates writing shorthand spelling and more.
The De Leon Hospital Auxiliary sponsors a blood drive on Thursday April 7 from 1 00 to 7 00 p m in the De Leon High School auditorium with San Angelo Blood Services collecting blood Rev and Mrs Bob Watson donate 25 00 for a donor drawing.
Bill Huff announces Mary Webb as Executive Director of the Texas Peanut Producers Board. Webb joined as secretary in 1975, became Assistant Executive Director in 1981, and has served as Acting Executive Director since 1982. She sits on the National Peanut Council and Export Executive Committee. She is office manager and assistant secretary treasurer of the Texas Peanut Growers Association, married to Tommy Webb with three children in Nimrod, Eastland County.
Voters named incumbent Shirley Sides and newcomers Jackie Pounds and Franklin Loudermilk to the De Leon school board for three three year terms. Pounds led with 386 votes, Sides 301, Loudermilk 261, with other contenders and a total turnout of 619. Incumbents Womack Pounds Robinett led city council tally. Hospital board totals 374 votes. Tom Clayton and Glenn were elected to city council.
Phyllis Wells, 22, of Comanche died after a pickup truck crash near PAR Village Friday. Her husband Dempsy was thrown clear and is in stable condition at De Leon Hospital. Firefighters battled the blaze as the vehicle burned. Services for Mrs. Wells were held in Comanche. She also left her parents, two brothers, and three sisters.
Kindergarten pre registration will be held on Monday and Tuesday April 25 and 26 at the old lunchroom building of the elementary school. Parents should bring birth certificates and immunization records. Children must be five years old before September 1 1983 to be eligible.
The St. Joe Baptist Church north of De Leon announces revival services from April 10 to April 17. Pastor Melvin Fields leads, with C L Mahon Jr conducting singing. Sunday hours are 11 AM and 7 PM, weekdays 7 30 PM.
The 7th 8th and varsity Kitten squads travel to Comanche on Thursday April 7 for the District 12-AA track meet featuring De Leon Hamilton Dublin Hico Ranger and Millsap. Field events start 9:30 a.m. with prelims at 12:30 p.m. finals at 3:00 p.m.
