Local notes on park festival grounds and new Drive-In screen

Community column reports updates in De Leon including a new 38 by 72 foot Drive-In screen at the Drive-In theater, city park and festival grounds work, a renovated clubhouse, and an exhibit building site east of the wooded grove. Desdemona road paving begins with first coat soon and a public auction for the Comyn School Building on April 16 is hinted with a potential bargain.

Pecan Field Day Set Near Gorman In Eastland County

The Eastland County Pecan Field Day will be April 28 at the C D Simmons orchard near Gorman. The event runs from 10 am to mid afternoon with talks by state pecan experts on cover crops fertilizers crowd control varieties insects and sprays. Speakers include B G Hancock W L Rainey L Kent and J Romberg plus W Foster Jr and others. Attendees may join round table discussions and bring a picnic with coffee and drinks provided. The group will also announce the county pecan show location for the year.

Results of Trustee Election Announced

A canvass of the trustee election held on April 2 1955 for two seats on the De Leon Board of Education shows Jack Donohue 98 votes Co M Caraway Jr 84 votes Joe Morgan 67 votes and J B Morris 63 votes Donohue was re elected and C M Caraway Jr filled the post vacated by W A Morgan Other board members listed include Pte Donegan president Kermit Neel secretary O A Whitehurst Dr T H Sharp and Loyd Boyett.

The Parent Teachers Association will meet Thursday evening April 14 at 7 30 p m in the High School auditorium with S E Weaver as speaker. Awards will be given and everyone is urged to attend.

New Uniforms Assured For D. H. S. Band

Band parents report the D H S Senior Band will receive new uniforms after strong community support. The school board approved the purchase, while the Parents club reiterates ongoing fundraising to cover remaining costs and lists planned drives and donor details to be announced.

De Leon Pension Group Meeting Set April 11

A state wide meeting of the Senior Citizens organization will be held at De Leon city hall from 10:00 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. Ben Wilson, State President, will discuss pension funding and amended liquor tax allocations. The event is open to all, especially old age assistance recipients, with dinner at minimal cost and an entertainment program featuring the De Leon High School Band.

Revival To Begin At De Leon First Baptist Church

A Spring revival opens Easter Sunday April 17 at De Leon First Baptist Church. Cottage prayer meetings run each evening this week at listed homes at 7 00 with an all night prayer session Saturday April 9 from 7 00 to 9 30 am. Sunday School attendance goal 600 and Training Union 365. Evangelist Rev H Jeff Pritchard and singer Ray mond L White lead sessions twice daily at 10 00 am and 8 00 pm with 7 30 pm prayer services. Everyone invited.

Dane Kimmell Makes A&M Poultry Judging Team

Mr and Mrs Alvis Kimmell announce their son Dane Kimmell has been chosen for the Texas A&M poultry judging team. As a junior he earns this honor, with seniors typically making the squad. The group departs for Mississippi on April 15 for a judging trip. The Kimmells expect Dane and wife June home for Easter.

Weeping Oak Drive-In Expands Screen For Cinemascope

Mr and Mrs Edgar Brinson owners of the Leon and Weeping Oak drive-ins enlarge the Weeping Oak screen to 72 by 32 feet to show Cinemascope. The first picture Vera Cruz in Technicolor with Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster opens for three nights from Monday April 11. Admission remains 40 cents adults 12 to 14 25 cents and children under 12 free.

Longtime Fort Worth peace officer Spivey dies at 57

Wid Spivey 57 former De Leon police chief and Comanche County sheriff died in Fort Worth after heart attack. He served as White Settlement Police captain and answered an emergency call March 12 before collapsing en route to a hospital. Survived by wife Evin Sloan, his mother, and brothers Roy and Melvin Spivey.
