Cancer Crusade mobilizes volunteers for April drive

The Comanche County Cancer Society units starting preparations for an April Crusade urge volunteers to join. The De Leon Cancer Drive begins April 10, inviting residents to donate what they can and support annual early diagnosis and treatment efforts to fight cancer.

De Leon Schools Promote Special Reading Program

De Leon Public Schools run a reading program for grades one through six led by Mrs. Alderman with aide Mrs. Ballard. Fifteen pupils per grade are grouped three days weekly. testing measures comprehension. Programs include Imperial Listening Tape, Junior Controlled Readers, workbook groups, and Tach X assisted work. Texas reports 3594 traffic deaths in 1971 on state roads

Colonel Wilson E. Sperr director of the Texas Department of Public Safety announced a final tally for 1971 showing 3,594 deaths and 121,082 injuries from motor vehicle accidents. The report notes deaths rose slightly from 1970, while the death rate per 100 million miles fell 3 percent, with rural and urban fatalities split 2,184 and 1,410 respectively.

Bearcat Relays Host 18 Team Meet This Saturday

The Bearcat relays host an 18 team track meet this Saturday uniting Class B A and AA schools. Field events start at noon, prelims at 2 00 and finals at 7 00 with 75 cent admission and 25 cents for finals.

Volleyball Tournament Sponsored by Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library sponsor a women's volleyball tournament at De Leon High School on Saturday April 8 from 9 30 AM to 3 00 PM with 9 teams from De Leon Dublin Gordon and Lingleville. Winners receive trophies along with second and consolation prizes. A bake sale and concession stand run all day to raise funds for new children's books for the summer reading program.

Tower seeks USDA funding for peanut pest control research

U S Senator John Tower urged the Agriculture Department to fund a Cooperative State Research Service project on new peanut crop pest control methods. Eisenrich Mahan Win Elects Trustees in De Leon ISD

Gayle Mahan led the ballot with 180 votes and Dr Eisenrich garnered 153 votes to win seats on the De Leon Independent School District Board. Bill Lindsey 148 votes and incumbent Billy J. Hare 100 votes completed the field as 298 voters turned out.
