The community mourns Jawis Edwin Thompson, a retired farmer and early settler, who had been in apparent good health days before a sudden illness. A cold led to confinement at home for several days, with a brief recovery followed by a relapse and death.
Stenley Thompson, born Cobourne Ontario March 4 1649, died suddenly at ten Sunday morning while his family assembled. Survived by wife Ellen Stone and ten children, plus three brothers and three sisters. He farmed near Davidson Manitoba and later near Stoney Lake Ontario, active Liberal and Methodist.
Resolutions from the Saskatchewan School Trustees Association convention in Saskatoon include prohibiting non English language instruction, requiring English literacy for trustees, restricting delegates, and tying funding to district taxation. Other points urge English instruction for all pupils and quarterly village tax remittance through municipalities.
The patriotic bonspiel began a week ago and proceeds with two draws nightly and one at four. Duff rink awaits the Robinson Clark final, Rae and Sanderson contest first homeers, Clark Rae and Sanderson reach the fours, with Smith or Garrett to join after the seven o clock draw. Meiers Coutts and Griggs sponsor a fourth open competition with several draws, continuing through Saturday or early next week.
The church service for the departed was well attended and many relatives and friends viewed the body. The casket was surrounded by floral tributes including a pillow from the family and crosses, hearts, wreaths, and sprays from various local individuals and families.
Willner council met with Deputy Reeve Manning presiding. Councilors Lowther McNeill Constable and Hagen attended as the board authorized publishing the 1917 financial statement and approved paying dues to the Saskatchewan Rural Municipalities Association. Delegates Hagen and McNeill were named to the Moose Jaw convention, with Hagen to attend the hail insurance event. The group discussed a Canada Saskatchewan Land Co. settlement proposal offering arrears payments, and directed the secretary to prepare a report on James McNeil.
In Regina’s parliament buildings a reception honored war heroes including Joseph Lovatt of Bradworth who earned the Military Medal in August 1917. While leading a patrol he secured a prisoner and critical intelligence before dying in a later engagement. His CO praises the courage that earned the medal.
The Red Cross Society thanks numerous donors including Mr Gee Lelson Mrs McEwen Mrs Cameron Mrs Ganderson Mrs Norris Mrs Grace Mr Banks Mrs Russell Mrs Downard and Mrs Wm Lick for pairs of socks and other items. Donations include three pairs from Mrs Tryon three nightgowns one pajama four coats and a surgeon's coat. The Helpers contributed a bath robe and trench caps. Five pairs of socks remain in the Rest Room with donors unnamed.
