London May 30 The secretary of the admiralty Mr Arnold Forster rejected Sir Charles Dilkes charge that Britain's ship building program is too small He cited 35 ships completed in the last year 75 under construction including 20 armored cruisers and plans for more than 27 additional ships This year ship construction alone would exceed 45 million dollars Subsidized merchant vessels may continue subject to policy changes and to possible ownership registry shifts.
New York May 30 Harvard and Yale topped the trials at Berkeley Oval in track and field as qualifiers for the finals. Harvard lists 19 finalists and Yale 18, with Princeton 5, California 7, Pennsylvania 5, Cornell 4, Amherst 3, Columbia Georgetown and Syracuse two, Rutgers and Williams one each. Dewitt of Princeton set an intercollegiate hammer mark with 164 feet 10 inches, while Plaw of California underperformed in shot put.

The semi final at Tuxedo for the Metropolitan golf tourney on May 30 saw last year’s winner Douglas eliminated as Travis set a new course record with a 72 and quick play dominated the round.

Springfield May 30 George T Hall of Seams wins with 192 targets hit out of 200 at the Illinois Gun Club contest. Frank Richardson follows with 132, the next best score listed in today’s standings.

Sioux City May 30 The absorption by the Great Northern of the Eastern Minnesota Willmar and Sioux Falls and other proprietary lines is described as a move by James J Hill to remove them from Northern Securities. The plan would consolidate Great Northern and Northern Pacific with the Burlington system under a new Iowa railroad law, forming two separate systems free of proprietary entanglements, easing a potential future takeover into Burlington.
Tacoma May 30 reports a major iron discovery on islands off British Columbia and southeast Alaska. Hematite magnetic and specular ore bodies, with adjacent limestone, are being secured by Henry Hewitt leading a syndicate planning a large iron and steel operation. A 20-ton blast furnace is planned for Tacoma tide flats. Northern Pacific tests and Great Northern experts had flagged high grade ore in earlier years.
Sylvester Pennoyer, former Oregon governor from 1886 to 1894, died suddenly in Portland at his home from heart trouble. His health had declined over the past year. Mrs. Pennoyer found him in the library at about 5 PM and attempted to rouse him but he was dead. Pennoyer had been notably outspoken, refusing to meet President Harrison at the state line in 1891 and urging President Cleveland to attend to his own business in 1893.
Rev C H Roche pastor of City Evangelical Lutheran church for 19 years in Columbus Ohio died aged 56. He formerly served in Detroit and Joliet and was widely known in Lutheran church circles.
Washington May 30 It is understood at the navy department that if Congress fails to pass immediately the bill placing Naval Constructor Hobson on the retired list he will resign His eyesight is said to be bad from duty at Manila but a board did not report him unfit For pension and retirement he would receive 2400 yearly and could pursue business or politics He is assigned to Lewis Nixon shipyards at Elizabethport N J to supervise a navy contract and has held many posts since the Spanish war with brief tenures He was advanced to captain in the instructors corps.
Torrents from Wichita mountains swept away many prospectors cabins in Wildman Oklahoma. Believed some occupants perished as floodwaters surged through the area during May.

An unconfirmed Edmonton report says 40 Galician immigrants left Edmonton for Victoria on a raft. The raft capsized twenty miles below Edmonton, drowning 12 of the passengers. The incident occurred on the Sackatchewan river during their journey.
