Dr Chase Reese of Yass obtained four fine spectrum photographs with the objective prism of the spectroscope. Six cameras on the polar axis yielded clear outer corona pictures. Professors Wood Frisby and Yowe made good corona drawings. Wood and Dr Dorsey used polariscopes. All experiments passed off successfully. Every plane was excluded.
Washington Georgia May 28—Observations of the solar eclipse were highly gratifying. Professor Alfred E Burton in charge of the MIT expedition reported perfect weather and precise timing for contacts and totality. Magnetometer readings showed no magnetic disturbance. Seven corona sketches and six photographs were taken by Harrison W. Smith.
The sun total eclipse occurred at 8 53 in a cloudless sky lasting about 30 seconds. President McKinley and his party observed from the Dolphin near Lambert's point while Secretary Gage and his party watched from the light house tender Holly. The Dolphin moved up the bay toward Washington.
New York reports detail rare jewels sent to Catherine S. Clark on her marriage to Dr Lewis Rutherford Morris at St. Thomas church. A detachable stomacher of diamonds with a pigeon-blood ruby and a canary-colored diamond tops the collection, valued at $60,000, plus a diamond and emerald tiara and a three-diamond ring valued at $4,000. The couple, and their gifts, will sail for Europe on June 30.
A violent May storm lashed Chicago with frequent thunderbolts and vivid electrical displays. Two people died from the lightning: Lucy Holden, 12, on West Twenty-third Street, and George Resch, a saloon keeper. Several others were injured or affected by the storm, including Irene Holden and Mrs. John Coughlin, with property damage also reported. A young girl was struck and killed by forked lightning while walking with her sister, who sustained minor injuries.
Guthrie Ohio May 28 Mrs N Hopkins of Case township Cleveland county was divorced last September. Hopkins was jailed for threatening to kill his former wife if she dated another man. He was released Saturday and the couple reunited at the state line door and were remarried at the probate judge's office.
Chicago suffers an eighth inning collapse with five errors and six hits as Brooklyn and St. Louis fall in listless games. Garvin pitches seven strong, but poor support in the eighth aids the nine-run surge. Philadelphia routs St Louis 11 to 4, while Pittsburgh shuts out New York 14 to 0 behind resilient batting and sharp fielding.
Buffalo defeats Milwaukee 4 to 3 in a tight American Association contest as Carsey and Wilson shine. Carsey’s hitting and Wilson’s error drive Buffalo runs, while Milwaukee’s scoring relies on clean hits. Batteries: Carsey Searecongest Wilson Spies for Buffalo. Renger Diggin Hastings Fisher for Milwaukee.
The Western Association games at Omaha Sioux City Pueblo Denver and Cincinnati Indianapolis Chicago were affected by rain or wet grounds. Batterys listed include Maupin Biting McParland Twineham Burrell Wilson Cochoran Cole Brecknam Graham Simmons Hansen and Peters. Games were postponed due to weather in multiple cities.
St Louis reports on day 26 of the street railway strike as fewer than 50 of the original strikers have returned to work. Transit cars are run by strikebreakers and imported workers, with at least 30 hires said to have joined the strikers. The company refuses to discharge hired workers while the strikers demand restoration of all original positions.
In Cincinnati on May 28 at the People s Athletic club Oscar Gardner stopped Gus Bezenah of Covington in four rounds and finished Larry Greeason of Chicago in the same show. Bezenah endured four rounds while Greeason failed to go the distance.
London May 28 The illness of Mrs Gladstone is reported more serious with strength failing as family members are summoned to Hawarden.
San Francisco reports warehouses crowded with goods for Honolulu awaiting the June 14 tax repeal. Honolulu Automobile Co. stores 60000 worth of hacks and car riages at Port Costa facing 12000 duty now. free in two weeks. Steamers ship only essentials. hawkers stockpile cigars as Manila brands drop from duty free to higher prices.
Topeka Kansas May 28 Kansas seeks 20,000 additional workers to save a vast wheat crop. State Grain Inspector McKenzie says harvest will start in southern Kansas by June 12 and total yield may reach 85,000,000 bushels. Heavy rains drenched central Kansas last night, but labor shortages threaten progress. Sumper County alone requires 1,000 extra harvesters, a need echoed in about 20 other counties with 2,000 expected from Oklahoma as harvest moves northward.
Miss Olive Miller daughter of cattleman J H Miller planned to marry J K Cline near Cushing Oklahoma. The minister questioned legality of a license in Indian Territory so the bridal party rode to the line and the ceremony was held under an oak tree then returned to the Miller ranch for the wedding supper.
New York May 2 A movement led by several large southern railroads aims to settle Boers in select southern sections. With the Transvaal war seen as short, plans take shape to encourage Boers who resist reconstruction under English rule to emigrate to the United States.
The special board of inquiry at the immigration station denied landing rights to James Fitzharris alias Skin the Goat and Joseph Mullet of the Irish Invincibles. Deemed felons due to their 1882 Phoenix Park murders involvement in Ireland, they face deportation under U S law prohibiting admission of persons convicted of infamous crimes or crimes of moral turpitude.
May 28. Mrs Hetti Green, New York's multimillionaire, has arrived at Bellows Falls VI and opened her summer residence for part of the season. Miss Sylvia Green and her ailing father will arrive around June 1 and be joined later by son F E R Green, Texas delegation chairman, after the Philadelphia convention. The family resumes residence for the first time in years.
Washington May 28 MacArthur cables the war department three officers and 56 men with 46 rifles surrendered unconditionally at Cuyatoc yesterday. Three officers 46 men and 55 rifles surrendered unconditionally today at Tarlac. Surrenders were spontaneous and seen as very encouraging as government troops press remaining forces.
Manila reports daily scouting and small engagements with gains for the U S forces. Last week Ninth Twelfth Thirty third Thirty fourth and Thirty sixth regiments killed forty six enemies taken 180 prisoners and seized 300 rifles and ammunition. Colonel Gardin with Twenty ninth regiment bluejackets from Helena landed at Palanog Masbate Island routed insurgents occupied town after an hour. Insurgent commander with 20 officers and 230 men surrendered May 20 giving up 100 rifles. Prisoners disarmed and freed on the plaza amid relief efforts for food shortages. No trouble expected in Manila though provinces flood in to escape conscription and bandit outrages. Funston case ends with discontinuance finding his action justifiable.
The transport Haencock reaches Hong Kong carrying members of the new Philippines Commission en route to Manila. The arrival marks the opening leg of the commission's official journey to establish duties and set parameters for governance in Manila.

Police report crime rampant in Clinton Brake area with assaults, robberies, and looting, plus Abraham Ballou's Shoe Store nearly destroyed by a forest city fire. Scarlet fever observed at Radcliffe.
Clinton records a violent weekend with a Northwestern brakeman assaulted and robbed on a moving train near Wheatland, then dumped and bruised. Three city robberies netted $100 in cash and jewelry from the Mewherter family. Local hunting yields include 20 wolf scalps brought in by Andy Schmaltz and two by John Nissen, all declared slain Sunday in the county.
Fire swept through Abraham Ballou’s shoe store in Forest City on Saturday night about midnight and nearly razed the building and stock. The blaze, believed incendiary, caused extensive damage but neighboring structures were saved by the quick work of the fire department. The stock was insured for $1,000.
Adjutant General Corbin says about 40,000 volunteers will begin returning to the United States from the Philippines in December as enlistments expire by July 1901. Regular forces are prepared, with quartermaster and other departments shipping vast supplies. Officials trust the new Philippine commission will restore order, reducing need for full regular presence after volunteers depart.

San Jose May 28 Califor nia Cured Fruit association makes final bid to control this season’s prune crop by urging growers to modify contracts. Proposals include striking price guarantees, 4 percent crop demand with management discretion, boycotting brokers limited to association deals, and forming a corporate entity to act as a single party.
The Supreme Court decides Dewey's bority claim against the admiral's contention. The priest deprives the admiral and the men with him at Manila of one half the amount claimed by them. Chief Justice Fuller dissents.
A probate fraud contest lodges against the will of Mary Beach Touser filed by Sarah B. Roher of Council Bluffs Iowa, the nearest living relative. The document leaves over one million dollars to churches and charity including St. Clement's in New York and a farm in Los Angeles county. The contest cites possible insanity and undue influence as grounds for challenge.
John Hamilton Drake of Albia Illinois died in a Chicago Great Northern hotel entry room at 9 a.m. on a business trip. He was 71, born in North Carolina, longtime president of Albia's First National Bank since 1872, a prominent Iowa Republican who declined public office. He was accompanied by his wife and had planned to return to Iowa Friday night. Former Governor Drake was notified.
Telegraphic notice states the subject conveyed concern for his brother’s illness and arrived in the city Saturday to be with him at his death. General Manager Brown of the Burlington road lent his private car to the family, and the body was transported to Iowa last night.
Fort Madison May 28 John Stolwyk money order clerk could not open the post office safe until 2 p m. A convict named Meyer, serving time for counterfeiting, was brought in to open it. Meyer, guarded by John Garner, correctly operated the tumblers after a misplaced small key delayed service hours.
Rock Rapids reports Carl Prahl, a prosperous farmer five miles southwest of town, died Friday night from self inflicted wounds. Friends observed odd behavior earlier, and he was found dead in a pasture about a quarter mile from home. He severed arteries after failing to cut his throat, leaving a wife and five children.
Passengers on a sleeping car from Kansas City were held up and robbed by a lone highwayman between Falls City and Stella Nebraska. The bandit boarded the train a mile east of Stella, forced passengers back with a revolver, and escaped with little loot.
In Racine Wisconsin yesterday afternoon an automobile owned by a four minstrel company burned on Main street due to a gasoline leak. George Tifton treasurer and G E Jackson were aboard. Jackson suffered severe burns. The car valued at 2600 dollars was a total loss.
A new cold storage structure under construction at the Southampton docks collapsed this afternoon, burying about 50 workers. Several killed, many fatally injured, and numerous others are missing as rescue operations begin.
