A Rock Island passenger train carrying Grinnell and Iowa City students returning from the state meet at Des Moines derailed near the Grinnell depot. A smoker car was thrown across the tracks, several students were bruised and shaken, but no serious injuries occurred.
Des Moines May 28. Interstate collegiate meet officials postpone the state field meet until Wednesday because heavy rains left the track in poor condition.
May 23 reports Dr James Taggart Priestley of Des Moines elected president without opposition as the State Medical Association held meetings. Technical papers were read and discussion focused on legislation and expert testimony. Physicians and lawyers consider joint action against partisan experts in trials and smallpox vaccination remedies are urged in resolutions.
Dubuque May 23 A Tuesday night storm left the Milwaukee road in severe shape with washed out tracks and torn bridges. The Volga Calmar Waukon and Preston branches are idle and likely closed for days. Hundreds of workmen repair crews scramble to restore service as damage across the region mounts.
In Spencer a man claiming to be J E Morton arranged to purchase a major local business for 40000 dollars. He posted 4000 down and secured 200 to 400 dollars via telegraph and sight drafts from merchants, then fled toward Omaha. arrested in Tara and to be returned to Spencer.
Joseph S. Morgan, co owner of the Times and Globe Journal, received notice of his reappointment as postmaster of Dubuque. He has held the office for the past four years.

Hugh McGregor, fireman for Mike Elmore, is killed when struck by a passing car in Red Oak on May 28, raising safety concerns for railroad workers in town.

A contractor identified as McGregor was killed in the railroad yards after drinking with three colleagues, Conrad Howard, John O'Brien, and A. T. Cox. While seated between tracks, McGregor toppled backward, his head crushed by a freight car as it passed, the accident occurring in the forenoon.
Experts drilled the Salem rail station safe and blew off the door with high explosives. Although the safe was emptied, only unimportant papers remained and a card hung on the knob stating it was unlocked. No valuables were taken.
A warrant issued by Monona county attorney W. L. Smith for the arrest of Al Beard, jailed in Kansas City, Mo. Beard is accused of the Turin Iowa bank robbery on November 8, 1901. Witnesses here will identify him. American Surety Company backs the prosecution and will push to bring him to Monona county for trial.
Waterloo May 23 A strike is on at the Casebeer Bros cigar factory on Bluff street About 14 hands are out because the proprietors refuse to unionize the plant Historically open shop they declined to sign to employ only union labor prompting the walkout by union men
Des Moines reports that George A Lincoln state fish and game warden has not decided on raising a loan for the coming biennial period. He will draw on unexpended balance from the last appropriation, hoping it may last this year or longer, and will strive to run the program as economically as possible without letting it drop for lack of funds.
Two strangers, likely peddlers, visited Wagner's saloon and demanded liquor. When refused, one drew a gun, threatened to shoot the bartender, leading to a scuffle. The weapon discharged into the floor. Wagner and the bartender disarmed the man and the pair were taken into custody by police.
Russell Carr 90 in March and recently residing with daughter Emma Bates at 1127 Linn st Boone is believed to be the state and perhaps world’s oldest surviving Odd Fellow. He joined in 1841 and is linked to Stark Lodge 96 Toulon Illinois. Local Connecticut Link No 492 and other lodges will assist in his care.
Amse May 23 reports a board meeting led to the expulsion of Guy Hulsizer for a poem attacking Superintendent Miller. Miller accuses Woodcox of sending copies to Boone residents and of a discharge, triggering a groundside clash between Woodcox and Miller with a fist fight as teachers resign over the dispute.
In Dubuque on May 23 the Chicago Great Western railroad paid a $15,000 settlement for injuries to Charles Prowse from car coupling eight years ago. The suit is noted as one of the most famous of its kind, having been tried and retried in many courts.
Cyrenus H See ley of the Seeley How LeVan Co filed for bankruptcy in Des Moines on May 23. Liabilities total 32880.81 dollars, with 25830.81 dollars unsecured notes. Assets list 39 shares of Seeley How LeVan stock declared absolutely worthless. No other assets noted.

Des Moines May 23 The supreme court affirms in favor of Bankers Iowa State Bank against Mason Hand Lathe Co of Des Moines. Bank sued for debt after a June 15 1894 note for 3000 to W E Mason secured by chattel mortgage. Mason endorsed the note for security for J F Mason manager. Four notes followed. default judgment against the company and a judgment against W E Mason, who appealed.
Sioux City on May 23 reports two additional horse thefts. Charles Erickson of Floyd township lost a black mare Saturday night and J E Kinnick of Sawyers bluffs south of the stock yards lost a dark bay gelding last Thursday. Cards describe the horses and Leonard Brant, wanted for horse stealing, is also sought. James Shea of the Central restaurant defends Clayton Brant, saying the youth is unfairly maligned despite current jail suspicion.
In Ottumwa on May 23 Mrs. Vysile Russell attacked Miss Gladys Lamkin with a dirk on the street, wounding her seriously. Miss Lamkin had confronted Russell about Russell’s husband. A mail carrier aided Lamkin. Russell remains jailed awaiting the outcome. Also in Muscatine Noble faces life sentence for murder, to be moved to Fort Madison after sentencing. In Ft. Dodge steel laying begins for the Chicago Great Western Clarion to Hampton extension, with trains possible by early June pending weather.
In the Presbyterian general assembly a committee on church policy proposed a nine member conference committee on marriage and divorce. It urged ministers to stress the sacredness of marriage and to diligently verify impediments before ceremonies, while delaying action on altering a confession clause until the conference report. The Twentieth Century fund report showed receipts of 7,652,501. Norwegian Lutheran Synod opens with 500 delegates. it oversees Hamline Seminary and multiple colleges, totaling 850 congregations, 150,590 members, and 340 clergy.
