Morgan of Alabama urged an interoceanic canal commission inquiry to uncover any corporation or group aiming to obstruct the United States in building the Isthmian canal. The resolution was adopted. A bill creating a southern division of the southern district of Iowa for judicial purposes also passed.
Washington reports the war department summary of foreign vessels entering Porto Rico ports in the first quarter of 1900. In January 81 ships totaling 98,236 tons. February 81 ships totaling 9,383 tons. March 95 ships totaling 107,345 tons. Overall 257 vessels carrying 298,964 tons, with 14 ships totaling 139,020 tons under the American flag.
Washington May 21 The postmaster general suspended Director Rathbone and named Bristow acting director in Cuba. Bristow serves as Fourth Assistant Postmaster General.

Chicago drops a game as New York wins at Cincinnati due to Doheny’s wild pitching. Brooklyn topples Pittsburg while St. Louis beats Boston with Lewis shooting, and Bailey replaces Lewis. American League sees Buffalo fail to hold lead against Chicago as Kerns struggles and Clarke finishes. Milwaukee and Cleveland also lose, with Milleres and Wolverines errors cited.

He says he prefers steering the vessel to preaching during the warm months and will return to Marine City parish duties in the fall.
Washington May 21 One of the citys largest peace demonstrations gathered at the Grand Opera House last night under a committee of senators and representatives. Envoys of the South African republics spoke as thousands filled the theater, many occupying private boxes, while Mrs Fischer waved an American flag. Speakers including Sulzer Mason and Wellington urged support for the Boers.
A lone highwayman robbed the Coates hotel in Kansas City at 11 30 pm forcing the strong box of the cigar stand containing diamonds valued at 1200 dollars and 350 in cash and checks. He held two clerks at gunpoint and escaped on a horse. The robber, named Fishback by night clerk Gossett, is described as 35, six feet, well dressed, and had lived at the hotel for two weeks.
The Red House, a public house without beer, was dedicated in Siepney under church and dignitary sponsorship. It aims to be England’s church social equivalent to the American church saloon, offering a hotel and club with only coffee served, in a workingmen’s district.

Rev E Trumbull Lee of Cincinnati presented the board of missions for freed men report, noting receipts of 132,578 to maintain the rest and pay debt, expenses at 913,762, balance 192, and contributions to support of 71,762, up 7,183 from last year. He stressed education and uplift of southern Negroes as a growing concern.
Abraham G. Dixon, a longtime Omaha bookworm, is finishing a revised Bible he calls a woman's Bible. He argues it places women on equal footing with men and criticizes orthodox depictions. Dixon traces his ancestry to 1681 and Pennsylvania, and says the manuscript has been guarded for generations.
Mary A. Stafford state secretary of the Western Unitarian Sunday School association attends the Western Unitarian conference. She is among the prominent attendees and has led major Unitarian churches in the West. Since ordination in Humboldt Iowa she has maintained a long city pastorship in Sioux City and exchanged pulpits with Rabbi Roseman of Omaha, a first for a woman.

James Davidson was shot at a Mystic area dance near Ottumwa on Saturday night by William Quinley of Frankfort Kentucky. Davidson died Sunday morning. Quinley surrendered to the Anpanoose County sheriff.
In Muscatine last evening Wes ley Machlan a man 30 or more was attacked by the sons of Dave Settlemeier after their father joined the dispute. Machlan was stabbed multiple times with a knife sustaining abdominal and leg wounds and a left side wound near the lung. He may die from the injuries. Both sides were placed under arrest.
In Council Bluffs on May 21 Judge Smith sentenced J. A. Greg ory, a noted horse thief and desperado, to twenty years in the Fort Madison penitentiary. Convicted as an habitual criminal, he becomes the first to be sentenced under the state habitual criminal act. Gregory has four prior terms for horse stealing in Jefferson, Adair, Greene, and Harrison counties.
The Nutwood Driving club sets the aggregate purses at 350000 for the August 20 to 25 meet. Entries close June 15 and August 10.
Reported by excellent authority that Professor F B Cooper is being considered by Iowa college trustees to succeed President George A Gates. Cooper formerly led Des Moines schools and for five years headed Salt Lake City schools Utah.
