Federal grand jury adjourns to allow Packers to appear in court and answer injunction writs for alleged combination to influence beef and cattle markets. Interstate Commerce Commission investigates Western railroads over livestock rates. agreement on tariff equalization targeted by June 16 with effect by June 30. meeting adjourned to June 14.
Governor Yates begins annual inspection of Illinois charitable institutions next Wednesday with Mrs. Yates and board members. They will visit Rock Island Watertown Bartonville Quincy Geneva Moline Elgin and Chicago before ending May 31 in Wilmington to inspect the Soldiers Widows home and the proposed site for a new Delinquent Boys home.
Steamship arrivals noted include Glasgow Siberian from Philadelphia, Genoa Kaiserin Maria Theresa from New York, London Manitou from New York, Queenstown New England from Boston to Liverpool, Plymouth Columbia from New York to Cherbourg and Hamburg, Liverpool Haverford from Philadelphia and Majestic from New York.
Pekin Illinois May 15 Smith Hippen and Co grain elevator burned tonight. The structure stored 60 000 bushels of grain. Loss estimated between 86 000 and 100 000 dollars.
Albany May 15 former Supreme Court Justice Landon opened an inquiry under the Donnelly anti trust law to determine if there exists an illegal combination among major western meat packing firms to manipulate meat prices with a referee appointed to conduct the investigation.
In Philadelphia on May 15 under a United States court order, James M. Beck's special master commissioner sold 9,050 of 10,000 shares of the Philadelphia Record Publishing Co. par value 100. William S. Stenger bought the stock for 2,300,000 and also purchased 470,000 of 6 percent bonds for 654,000. Stenger stated he represented himself. Rival bidders included Wesley M. Oler and Adolph Ochs, with Oler contending for the vice and Ochs stopping at 1,830,000. A separate sale of 15 shares went to Stenger for 2200 per share after bids climbed past 1.5 million.
More than 50,000 gathered in Indianapolis for the dedication of the Indiana state soldiers and sailors monument. The cornerstone laid in 1889, the 28412 feet tall structure cost about $600,000. John W. Foster gave the oration, General Lew Wallace presided, Gustavius V. Menzies spoke for the monument board, Governor Durban accepted, and James Whitcomb Riley read a commemorative poem titled Soldier.
The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations considered Senator Mason’s bill to grant Clara Barton a $5,000 yearly pension. It indicated willingness to meet her wishes but chose not to set a precedent by establishing a civil pension list.
Notes from the board of trade of Louisville reveal a plan to raise 100000 dollars for Kentucky’s exhibit at the Louisiana Purchase exposition. World’s fair offices are in St. Louis for directors while most staff work at the grounds.
Washington May 15 Officials of the Grand Army appoint a committee to arrange the dedication of a bronze monument to Benjamin F Stephenson founder of the G A R. The Webb sculpture shows Stephenson in uniform with a gavel, to stand before the Bank of Washington building in a central location.
Charles M. Schwab announces purchase of Richmond Beach on Staten Island to aid poor and sick New York children. The property includes a beach lake grove and high land. Plans call for adapting buildings, daily outings for 1500 to 2000 children with meals, bathing boating and games under charitable organizations guidance. Mrs Schwab shares interest in the project.
In St Louis on May 15, 132 shares of Wiggins Ferry stock owned by Mrs Mary Bowen, held in Paris, were tied up by an injunction in the U S Express office. Mississippi Valley Trust claims ownership of stock sent from Cincinnati to be handed to Mercantile Trust, which seeks Rock Island railroad control. Prices rose from 500 to 2000 a share amid the control battle. Bowen's offers and counteroffers illustrate the high stakes and tense negotiations.
The London Chronicle notes J Z Hills purchased the China Mutual Steam Navigation Company, owner of 13 large steamers operating between Liverpool and the Orient.
In New York on May 15 Dr Henry Van Dyke of Princeton University was elected moderator of the General Presbyterian Body on the second ballot. A rosewood gavel from Jerusalem was presented as a gift by Rev B A Stein of Stockton California. The assembly adjourned until tomorrow after the induction.
The Women's General Missionary Society of the United Presbyterian church concluded its 19th convention in Benia Ohio on May 15. Elected officers include President Mrs. George Moore First Vice President Mrs. John A Wilson Second Vice President Mrs. A W Spalding Secretary Mrs Mary Porter Treasurer Miss E J Woe Board of Directors Mrs W J Reid Miss E J Sloan Mrs N W Stevenson Mrs W R Wilson and Mrs J B Hill.
The Illinois Sunday school convention in Sterling closed with B J Jacobs of Chicago named Illinois member of the international executive committee and W B Jacobs elected chairman of the delegation to the Denver international convention. W C Pearce of Chicago was re elected president of the First district and P P Laughlin became president of the normal alumni. Notable speakers included Dr John Potts of Toronto Alfred Day from Michigan and Miss Finie M Burton of Kentucky.
The naval branch building of the Young Men's Christian Association in Brooklyn was dedicated today May 15. Speakers included Secretary of the Navy Moody Admiral Bower and General John J. McCook. President Roosevelt sent a letter of regret.
The National Missionary Society of the Universalist church elected Rev. Florence K. Crocker of Ann Arbor Michigan as president. Mrs BE Townsend of Sycamore Illinois was chosen a member of the executive committee.
A San Francisco letter from a December expedition reports reaching a so called treasure island. Gold was found in sand along the seashore and quartz on the island is believed gold bearing. The island’s exact location is not stated, with the sender posting from Ecuador suggesting a site off that coast.
New York Herald reports financier Russell Sage will extend his stay at 506 Fifth Avenue with a renewed 21 year lease. The Gerry estate owns the land and raised rent to about 312,500 annually for the next term. Sage said he will not move, despite the high rent, noting he has rebuilt the house to suit Mrs. Sage. The lease includes a clause that buildings and improvements pass to the landowner if the lease ends.
London Mail reports a humorous letter for a home counties town police post. The applicant mocks the process, lists odd details about religion and physique, and signs off as a hopeful constable. The head constable reportedly keeps the missive framed in his office.
Esther Dowie daughter of Dr Alexander Dowie founder of Zion died from burns suffered when her hair caught fire on a gas jet. She was 33 and a University of Chicago student. Dowie prayed at bedside as coroner's inquest found death due to accidental burns.
Cincinnati supplies most of the Midwest with baseballs and supports about 125 workers in local factories. The process uses 9,000 skins per season, hand shaping, cord binding, automatic molding, drying for three to four weeks, and final dressing. About 200,000 skins stay in bins, with covers cut by hand and sewn by women. a baseball take six weeks to produce with prices from 3 cents to $1.25.

New Yorker Kid Abel of Chicago defeated Tommy Sullivan of New York by disqualification in the fourteenth round after Sullivan’s manager leaped into the ring as Abel’s bout opponent was being pummeled. A postfight melee involved officials police and spectators following the decision at the St. Louis arena on May 15.
The State college tennis tournament drew few spectators as Bailey brothers of the State University won the team event by defeating the State Normal. J. H. Bailey took first in singles, Holbrook of Ames was second, and Seerley of the State Normal placed third.
Milwaukee officials announced that the annual Wisconsin State Golf Association championship will be held at the Milwaukee Country Club links on July 24 and 25. Representatives from Milwaukee, Janesville, Kenosha, Appleton, Oshkosh, La Crosse, Madison and Dartford will attend the event.
The minister of agriculture M. Du py organized a time trial of alcohol powered cars from Champigny to Arras and back to St Germain covering 419 kilometers. Eighty nine vehicles started at two minute intervals despite rain. W K Vanderbilt Jr was No 53, his car sent away at 4 56 a m at 64 kmh. Maurice Farnum led to Arras with a time of 4 48 5 45.
