Washington May 9 John Haddow of Keb Iowa organizer of the United Mine Workers was pardoned by President Roosevelt after a contempt conviction in the western district of Virginia. He was sentenced March 25 to six months in Lynchburg jail for violating an injunction against organizing miners for a receiver operated mine. Judge Henry G. McDowell issued the injunction which was seen as a blow to labor. Rep Lacey helped secure the pardon. Four others convicted for the same offense were also pardoned.

Des Moines on May 9 a mine shot firer John Jones was instantly killed by a slow shot at the Des Moines Coal and Mining Company. Robert Heath cote was injured by the same blast. They had aimed to fire with a fuse but it burned slowly. Jones walked a half mile to the shaft to get help before the body was recovered. It was the first day on the job for the shot firers.
