Vici and other teams lead opening night scores as Dubuque hosts the event. Individual contests are set for Thursday under the American Trotting Association rules and officers were elected at the biennial congress in Chicago.
Chicago May 6 The managing committee of the intercollegiate athletic association in charge of the May 31 meet at Marshal Field admitted entries from South Dakota Notre Dame Detroit and Knox colleges. North Dakota men were disqualified for unknown athletic standing and Beloit’s Bacon deemed ineligible as a preparatory student. One South Dakota entry Heard from Rankton was rejected as ineligible.
Jefferson City May 6 officials from St. Louis St. Joseph and Kansas City failed to appear as the supreme court heard the inquiry by Attorney General Crow into the beef trust. Witnesses testified to damaged meat sold at reduced prices to restaurants and boarding houses and that an arbitrator fixes packers prices with rebates to retailers and meat prices rising four to five times since January. Crow said the day’s testimony showed an ironclad agreement among St. Joseph packers.
Chicago May 6 Freight rates on pressed beef and live beeves from Missouri Tiger points are to be restored after July 1 to the levels in effect before June 30 1903. Each class of freight will rise about 5 cents per hundred. An executive meeting of Western roads today reached an agreement to restore former charges.
In Stevens Point Wisconsin on May 6 a servant discovered a mummified infant’s skeleton in a box beneath the attic floor of John W Clifford’s Clark Street home. The corpse wrapped in a woman’s undergarment appeared hidden for six or seven years and was secretly buried after being shown to several people. The residence, a fine city home once owned by prominent locals, is now tied to John Clifford a leading stockholder in Clifford Fox Lumber.
Louis Franz a 17 year old German student, living with his uncle at 2088 Grenshaw street, died by his own action. He ate three boxes of matches after becoming homesick for his parents in Stettin. Found in bed, gnawed matches showed a painful death struggle as poison took effect.
Governor Jefferson Davis of Arkansas pardons Andrew Thompson on the condition he travel to Massachusetts within 30 days and seek state citizenship. The decision follows Davis citing northern sympathy for southern African Americans and a desire for Thompson to reform a portion of the black population.
Fire destroyed the business section of New Milford last night, with losses estimated between 500000 and 600000. About 50 buildings burned, including stores, two banks, three hotels, the post office, and the Y M C A building. The blaze started at 8 30 p m and burned until 4 a m before containment.

Bank robbers sought the Bank of Waco funds in York Nebraska on May 6. They obtained tools from a nearby blacksmith but only breached the door and knocked bricks from the vault before fleeing. Cashier Carscadden links three yesterday visitors to the crime. Bloodhounds followed to the railroad, likely a freight train escape. All York banks carry full insurance and losses were light. Suspects may be same burglars who probed the Milligan bank. Efforts continue to catch them.
New York May 6 a petition in voluntary bankruptcy was filed in the U S court against Offenbach and Moore stock brokers who suspended yesterday Epstein Bros filed for 4500 claims alleging insolvency for four months and that certain creditors are preferred A receiver is requested to be appointed.
Sioux City May 6. The fight for valuable lands along the Missouri river front began today as the city secured a temporary injunction restraining the Chicago North Western road from laying tracks on the land. The dispute will continue in the courts.
Morristown May 6 Representative J. S. Salmon Democrat of New Jersey’s Fourth district died suddenly at his Boonton home. Apoplexy was the cause. He was 56 years old.
J F Vanderberg and D W West both of Brooklyn were arrested on forgery malfeasance in office and conspiring to obtain money under false pretenses. The Standard Oil board declared a 10 per share dividend after a 20 per share payout in March. Also reported are bank call results, a deadly Foss cloudburst, a Choctaw and Oklahoma railway flood chase, and other assorted notes from politics to society.
Springfield May 6 Delegates arriving for Republican state convention. Hopkins leads in indorsement hopes for senatorial nomination with Mason vowing continued fight if Hopkins is not endorsed. Probable ticket includes Mamer Busse Bayliss with Cannon chairing and Northcott as permanent chair. Salem May 6 R W Taylor nominated for Utah’s 5th term in the 18th district after a prior press fight.
Bloomington May 6 John A Yer Jing of Bloomington was nominated today by the Republican congressional convention of the Seventeenth district.
Danville Tl May 6 The Republicans of the Eighth district for the 11th consecutive time today nominated Joseph G Cannon for congress.
In East St Louis on May 6 the Republican party of the Twenty second Illinois district nominated William W Rodenberg for Congress. Incumbent Hedges was renominated. In Des Moines May 5 the First Iowa district Republicans renominated Thomas D Hedge for Congress.

Samuel Wendell Williston has been selected by the University of Chicago trustees to head the paleontology department. He currently leads geology and anatomy at the University of Kansas and is a noted authority with more than 150 scientific works. Born in Boston in 1857, he has taught anatomy at Yale for several years.
The 25th annual convention of the Illinois Red Men opened with a street parade in Peoria. A public evening meeting featured mayor Bryan and national officers. About 600 delegates attended. New officers will be elected tomorrow.

Los Angeles May 6 Final defeat was today given to the proposition to admit colored clubs to the general federation of women's clubs The plan to down the individual club as a step toward re organization through state federations also failed The proposition to reduce the per capita tax from 10 to 5 cents was snowed under Delegates aided by Mrs Potter Palmer faced intense opposition The program included civic work discussions by Mrs Lillian Duncanson and Miss Perkins and a talk by Mrs Thaddeus Stanwood on civic service reform in public schools The evening featured an illustrated address by Mrs Charles Rhodes on Wagner festivals at Bayreuth and the nominating committee placed a single ticket for president led by Mrs Denison
