Memphis greeted the distinguished visitors as they arrived to hear the president speak. He pledged that the nation would settle all questions justly and with due regard for the people. The address emphasized unity, progress, and respect for constitutional processes.
President McKinley's Decatur and Corinth visits highlight national unity and industrial progress. He recalls Tennessee's 1847 transcontinental line idea, notes five Atlantic-Pacific routes, and urges open trade with China while defending Philippines. Springfield April 30 The House passed the congressional apportionment bill as expected, creating 25 districts with Cook and Lake counties in the First through Tenth. Rock Island joins the Fourteenth along with Hancock Henderson Mercer and Warren, while the senatorial map yields 51 districts with Cook County containing the first seven. Other measures include juror selection from countywide pools and various tax and highway provisions.

Des Moines reports the Polk county delegation to the state convention will be solid with no primary rule forcing delegates for Foster. A case of smallpox is reported in the Cedar Grove school district north of Russell. The patient, a young man named Noland, has been away recently and the method of contraction is unknown. Precautions have been taken to prevent spread.
Des Moines dispatch notes the annual Drake college versus University of Iowa dual track and field meet set for Saturday in Iowa City. The result, alongside prior home meets and a future Ames triangular meet among Ames, Drake, and Grinnell, will influence the state field meet in Des Moines on May 24.
Ottumwa April 30. Switchman Harry H. Albin disappeared after kissing his wife goodbye at 1 o'clock Friday morning. He had just been paid for the month and carried over $80. A thorough police inquiry is under way but no trace has been found, and foul play is suspected.
Des Moines April 30 Cummins may not secure a solid county delegation to the state convention. Foster appears set to net over 40 delegates in Polk county, winning his own precinct two to one and carrying several others. The county result surprises Cummins supporters, who anticipated a solid Cummins lead. Foster will have a supervisor's district and at least ten delegates to the state convention.
In Red Oak on Saturday, Plummie Norquist, 12, daughter of clothing merchant S C Norquist, died after a horse shied during a ride. She became entangled in the stirrup and was dragged several hundred yards, with multiple injuries including a crushed skull, leaving her an only child and deeply grieving her parents.
An injunction closed the saloons operated by Carl Steinmayer Link Hickson and Peter Claussen in Reinbeck. Judge Platt will hear the injunction proceedings in Waterloo later this week. The closures stem from internal fights among saloonmen and a public sentiment campaign spurred by Mrs Hitchcock of Chicago and Mrs Meissner wife of a local druggist who have been active in the area.

London April 30 A circular from Leyland Line chairman Ellerman states he has provisionally sold his 71 000 ordinary shares at £14 10s each to J Pierpont Morgan and Morgan will buy all others offered before May 26 on the same terms
The Daily News reports J. Pierpont Morgan has acquired control of Leyland Steamship, paying £25,000 deposit last Saturday. Ordinary shareholders to be paid out, with Morgan planning further shipping company purchases. Leyland’s 1900 report notes completion of West Indian and Pacific Steamship acquisitions, ownership above 99 percent of Wilson and Turness Leyland lines, and a dividend of 6 percent declared.
The Leyland line ranks among the world’s largest fleets with about 65 vessels, serving North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Lisbon routes. It acquired 20 ships from West Indian and Pacific Steamship, operates seven UK lines to New Orleans, London, and Antwerp, and focuses on freight though newer ships offer passenger space. In Hast St Louis Freddie Schaffer 12 of 1512 Gary Ave was pulled from a trestle into Cahokia Creek while hauling in a large fish and drowned. His uncle John Scheffer, fishing with him, heard a scream and plunged in but Freddie sank immediately. The net with the fish was recovered.
The steamer City of Washington arrived from Colon with eight men from the abandoned schooner Emma C. Knowles found off Barnegat last week. They were rescued by the steamer Alliance en route to Colon.
