London reports Buller stormed Pieters Hill aiding Ladysmith relief after Friday fighting during a armistice. Casualties total over 12,000, with Buller losing about 4,000 in four attacks. Desperate garrison endures heat disease and fuel shortages while war news hints at further action.
Feb 27 at Gavbreak near Paardeberg the British camp heard life fire. Canadians advancing along the river edge menaced Boers and enfiladed trenches. General Cronje surrendered after Prentyman accepted a conditional capitulation as Roberts witnessed the moment.
Mandant touched his hat in salute and Roberts returned it. The group dismounted and Roberts shook hands with the Boer commander. Roberts praised the defense before Cronje, who sat for breakfast with British officers after an interpreter facilitated talks.

London reports 72,483 casualties to date with 2,215 in the last fortnight. Eleven Scotch regiments suffer about 2,050 losses. eight Irish regiments 2,000. Gloucesters and Northumbrians also hit hard. Royal Canadians lose 121 and Victoria mounted contingent 26. Classification shows killed 1,995 wounded 6,838 missing 3,173 disease 30.
London dispatches report Canadian forces repelled orders to stop at the baronet’s line and captured 3,400 small arms. Shell fire barely touched Boer trenches, with about ninety wounded and unknown deaths. A Feb. 26 Arundel dispatch notes Rensberg’s reoccupation after a minor skirmish with no major damage to rail or town. Canadian valor praised by The Times.
In Des Moines on February 28, Representative Clark’s bid to abolish the state printer and state binder offices failed 45 to 48 in the house. Ayers moved to form a committee to draft a corrected abuse bill. The senate backed Harriman’s proposal to create a state department of agriculture. Des Moines February 28 Special reports the Iowa legislature swiftly passed a resolution ordering investigations into executive council members and their business ties with building and loan and insurance firms. A Senate committee was created to interview custodian Joseph McGarraugh, with a pledge to reform if needed. The house also debated abolishing the state printer and binder office, with Clarke urging dissolution and Temple defending the current system.
Reports indicate Senator Gear's health has improved since his return to Washington. Friends and colleagues note steady recovery and resumed duties as medical evaluations continue.

Rev Father Didadus Kottlander of St Augustine monastery collapsed while hearing a confession at St Augustine parish in Pittsburg on February 28. He had walked to the home of Valentine Speth on Lawrence Street to hear confession before dying of heart disease discovered by the physician.
Pittsburg Feb 28 Francis F T Lovejoy former secretary of Carnegie Steel Company limited and one of the defendants in H Frick vs Carnegie Steel filed his answer He says he took no part in the acts complained of and is a nominal defendant having resigned He joins in claiming Frick is still a member and shareholder with rights and privileges in the company and that the iron clad agreement may be null and void.
London reports a response to claims by W M Morrison of the American Presbyterian mission alleging Congo Free State outrages. The Belgian king says a judicial investigation is under way, with colonial secretary Chamberlain and ambassador Choate consulting foreign offices and the state department for instructions.
Ex Mayor Hugh J. Grant was appointed temporary receiver by Judge Lacomb in federal court for the Third Avenue Railroad company. All interested parties including lien holders agreed, with a hearing set about two weeks hence to appoint Grant as permanent receiver. The bill filed by Old Colony Trust cites extensive debt from recent extensions and motive power changes, and notes the road cannot pay.
Mrs A Moli of La Crosse Wisconsin has learned through the Swiss consul in Chicago that she and Chicago Madison and Milwaukee relatives are heirs to a large sum from Colonel Ludwig Traxler who served in Spain during Napoleonic wars and died there. The Spanish government reportedly provided funds to honor the Traxler claim. Mrs Moli plans to travel to Switzerland in May to pursue her share.
In San Juan on February 28 a major Porto Rican labor disruption began as 506 men building the military road from Ponce into Adjuntas marched into Adjuntas with flasks and pans reading We Workmen Demand Five Cents an Hour. They, though ordered, formed a committee to confer with contractors over the current three cent hourly wage and long workday from sunrise to sunset for 39 cents.
In Frankfort February 28 the court of appeals heard a motion by Democratic attorney general C H R Breckinridge demanding termingize him. Republican attorney general Pratt objected. The court ordered the matter submitted and will rule on the question at once.

Lon Curry, one of the Wilcox Washington Union Pacific hold up gang, was shot and killed at Dodson this morning while resisting arrest. The 1900s-era report notes Curry connected to the June Wilcox heist where $00 was secured.
