Fire nurse Wattles dies after St Luke's blaze loss
A. W. Wattles, nurse to Alderman William E. B. Kent, died at Mercy hospital after being fatally burned while attempting to rescue his patient during the St. Luke's Society Hospital fire. Wattles, severely burned about the head and chest, lost speech and strength, and succumbed despite efforts of firefighters and medical staff. He entered Kent's room when the fire began, fought through smoke and flames to reach Kent, but was unable to save him. He was removed by Captain YV White and others after exposure to the dense smoke.
