The All-American bowling team defeated the Wics 3 038 to 2 732 this afternoon and then beat Dubuque 2 970 to 2 541 in the evening. The latter score marks the second best showing against the All-Americans.
Broadhead Wisconsin December 27 John Duffy once a prominent farmer in this city now of Baird Iowa was killed with his daughter when a train struck them as they attempted to cross in front of it with a team and sleigh.
Cedar Rapids reports Dr. O B Beller of Garrison Iowa was arrested on a charge of threatening to kill his former fiancée Miss Hall of Vinton who wed Christmas to Dr Park of Ft Morgan Colorado.
Sioux City city leaders received a letter from Armour & Co. manager C. W. Lennon asking what added fire protection they would provide if Armour rebuilds their million dollar plant. Trustees say meetings with Armour representatives have not occurred and propose negotiating any time. Armour demands a sixteen inch water main. trustees prefer an additional eight inch main if Armour agrees. The council recognizes the importance of the situation for Sioux City.
H Yordy and Waterloo bloodhounds captured Cooney Cottner in Parkersburg on December 27. Cottner is charged with robbing the local post office and was found in possession of stamps and money totaling about 1150 dollars.
A December Ruthven blaze caused about $15,000 in damage with $5,000 insured. The Central furnace caused the fire. Notable losses include J B Large drugs $5000 insurance $3000 J F Nolan racket store stock $500 insurance none L T Barringer livery barn and hotel $3000 insurance none J F Reeley shoes and harness $800 insurance $200 F H Tweed printing office $1500 insurance $1000 T Knudson blacksmith shop $800 insurance none M Anderson wagon shop $400 insurance none.
Fire in Sibley on December 27 destroyed four frame buildings valued at 4,000 with merchandise worth 3,000. Insurance on the buildings totals 1,300 from St Paul Fire and Marine, London and Lancaster, and other policies. Merchandise covered by St Paul Fire and Marine 800, Insurance Company of North America 300, Lyman Millinery 350, American Mutual of Sioux City 350. Additional building coverage estimated at 700.
Express Messenger Tom L. Hamilton of the Des Moines Falls and Northern between this city and Cambridge was seriously injured while switching at Cambridge. He fell on the frozen ground, fracturing a kneecap and is injured in the performance of his duties as messenger and rear brakeman.
Mrs. W. P. Rose crans wife of a prominent Belmond merchant suffered serious injuries in a home explosion caused by a frozen steam pipe in the water range. Her arm and leg were broken and her face and hand badly lacerated as the stove was blown down and the room wrecked.
Iowa Happenings lists postmasters appointed in Camanche Clinton county Mount Zion Van Buren county Tweten Winnebago county with resignations noted. Rural free delivery to start February 2 at Linville Jasper county with one carrier, 23 mile route serving 17 square miles and 250 people. Also commissions of postmasters Motley Jerton A Matheus Mount Union and banking and medical appointments including reserve agent for First National Bank Fonda and pension examiners Dr Carl Stutsman Burlington and Dr F A Bowman Leona.
Algona reports a grim tragedy as Harry Adams 28 shot and killed his wife 24 and then fatally shot himself after years of a troubled marriage. The couple had resided in Algona for 15 years, with the motive described as long standing tensions.
A marital dispute culminated in a man assaulting his wife with a shotgun after she left him for a neighbor. He struck her unconscious, fired a shot to the head causing instant death, then killed himself. Police recovered the weapons and opened an investigation.
Louis Moore of Council Bluffs, a Northwestern Railroad carpenter, died thirty minutes after being crushed under the wheels of passenger train No. 3 as he slipped on ice while attempting to board at Clinton depot. He suffered severe injuries including amputation of a limb.
The First National Bank of Lyons sues in district court over a charted mortgage released by the Oto bank. Fred H. Cutting and J. T. Willett are named as owners. The suit seeks personal judgment against Melott, nullification of the mortgage release, and foreclosure. Lyons bank alleges $5,000 note originated in 1901 and rediscounted, with other banks asserting security claims.
Burr Veach of Centerville, an engineer for the Centerville Black Coal Co., was seriously injured after falling thirty five feet from a trestle over the K and W railway connecting two coal mines. He struck a 2x6 brace, causing a severe back fracture. He is in a plaster cast and resting easier, though condition remains critical.
Greene December 27 Pat Cronin a former tailor in town was jailed for drunkenness. He started a fire in his cell bedding and straw prompting a near fatal blaze as authorities searched for keys. The jail a frame building beside the business district has faced prior fire threats.
Fire broke out in the basement of a building housing J. B. Large rug store and spread to adjacent structures including P. L. Thompson racket store Hughes and Kirk livery barn J F Reiley and E Paulson boots and harness shop the Free Press office Knutson and Osterhus blacksmith shop and Magner Anderson wagon shop with extent and cause still undetermined.
Newton December 27 reports that the Jasper county farming land sale conducted a few days ago achieved the highest price seen in the area for some time, signaling strong demand and rising values among local farmers and investors.

Engineers survey a proposed line between Melrose and Des Moines for next year. The route would pass about ten miles west of Knoxville, cross the Des Moines river bottoms near Pleasantville and run northwest toward the city. The project targets coal country with no nearby rail facilities and focuses on extending the line into Des Moines and finishing the southern extension from Connellsville to St Louis.
Miss Effie Robinson aged 16 and Carl Hoyt eloped from Bishop Hill in Henry County aiming to wed despite parental opposition. After 75 miles and a crossing of the Mississippi, they were captured in Newitt. Fathers returned them home. Hoyt whipped, the girl scolded.
Ottumwa newspaper report states Mrs Grace Miller, a well known local resident, died this morning from burns suffered when her clothing caught fire from a spark on the stove last night. Despite efforts, she could not be saved.
Des Moines reports a coal theft involving 300 to 400 tons missing from Chicago & Northwestern cars. Chicago officer James Manning and Detective Frank Brothers traced losses to Marqusville and Sautfor areas. Two suspects, Hobson and Smith, were arrested and face a January 7 preliminary examination before grand jury consideration.
Thomas I Jebb a Des Moines bank representative was arrested at Ballingall hotel on a forgery charge after Very Rev F L Hoppman rector of St Marys Catholic church reported a $120 note forged in his name. The note dated Sept 29 1902 and discounted by Iowa National Bank was linked to the National Life & Trust Co. Jebb denied guilt and said he would prove his innocence.
Moses Hamm, longtime editor of the Dubuque Herald and former state senator, dies at 65. Willard Hull of Marshalltown heads to Pekin, China after government consular posting. F Robinson of Emerson seeks his missing wife in Omaha after a decoy telegram. Theodore Frederickson of Atlantic reports a Christmas Eve robbery in Omaha amounting to 580 dollars. his watch remains. Silas Walters, missing since November, reappears in Greensburg, Pa and writes to his former foreman in Battle Creek.
Mahoney of the Northwestern railroad seeks a recommendation for the bridge carpenter post. Sander Walker, a farmer near La Porte City, files for bankruptcy listing $6,000 liabilities with no non exempt assets. 52 creditors, including three newspapers. Walker once ran a La Porte City furniture business. Plus, Iowa pensions are issued: Hugh R. Duke $12, William Lemley $12, Charles Crozet $8, Edgar Fraryy $14 to widows minors and dependents.
New York December 27 The London correspondent of the Tribune says Guglielmo Marconi credited Scotch inventor Jas Bowman Lindsay as the first to believe in long distance wireless telegraphy. He noted Lindsay’s system was once deemed impractical due to energy needs and plate spacing but acknowledged greater feats if he lived today. Lindsay’s biographer described early experiments, original apparatus, diagrams, and letters proving originality and feasibility. Lindsay even patented his wireless method.
Denver reports the death of Prof. P. H. Van Diest at San Luis on Christmas Day. He was a renowned geologist. St Louis notes the death of Major J. B. Dennis, 64, longtime Missouri Democratic leader. New York reports Dr. Frederick L. Brady of Roosevelt’s Rough Riders died of typhoid, after serving in Las Guasimas, San Juan Hill, and the siege of Santiago.
Papers found with George Pleydell show he was son of Major Thomas LB Pleydell of Acton England and formerly wealthy. Once a London tea and coffee importer he lost his fortune, came to America to recover, failed, and lived as a sailor on the Great Lakes. His mother’s death in England left him an estate in Rockhampton valued over $200,000.
Detroit December 27 The Michigan Central began suit against the state for 6 million dollars in damages after the legislature revoked its special charter at the end of Governor Pingree’s term. The railroad claims the cancellation doubled its taxes by forcing fare and tax changes.
Chicago plans a five or six day celebration for the hundredth anniversary of settlement. A preliminary meeting of business men outlined mass meetings fireworks parades yacht racing athletic tournaments and educational conferences. John Kinzie, the first permanent settler, arrived with his family in 1803.
New York on December 27 reports a weekly bank statement with declines in Loans by 539,800, deposits by 1,902,400, reserve by 2,020,000, and surplus by 1,544,000. The United States deposit decreased 146,300 due to withdrawals and adjustments.
Russia's foreign minister Count Lamsdorff arrived in Sofia on his way to Belgrade and Vienna. Bulgarian Premier Lanoff hosted a luncheon with Prince Ferdinand and the cabinet. A torchlight Macedonian procession thanked Lamsdorff for czar aid to refugees and urged relief for Macedonian grievances.
An agency dispatch from Belgrade predicts Count Lamsdorff's visit will trigger a ministerial crisis with the foreign minister already resigning. It says Russia’s foreign minister's visit will prompt a reproach between Russia and Servia and that the Servian king and queen will visit the czar.
London on Christmas day hosted Queen Alexandra’s charity dinner for the widows and children of South African war casualties. Over 600 widows and 800 children attended as military bands, Highland pipers, and various acts filled the building with festive color. Sir Thomas Lipton welcomed guests, read a queenly message, and a telegram sent expressed loyal thanks and New Year wishes to the king and queen.
