South African Lighthorse officers Greenfell and Kirkwood left to inspect eastern hills patrols, horses returning alone at night. Col Donald of the Royal Fusiliers suffered a broken collarbone after a fall during outpost duty.
Dec 26 The naval guns began shelling the Boer position at 5 oclock this morn ing, continuing for two hours. Since the Colenso engagement, the enemy has energetically improved the entrenchments at Ladysmith today. Shelling of the Boer position at Umbulwana Mountain continued and bursts were plainly visible at Chievelley.
London December 27 the queen has proclaimed a warning to all British subjects not to assist inhabitants of the Transvaal or the Orange Free State or to sell or transport merchandise thereto. Penalty of the law. The proclamation will be gazetted tonight.

A resident of Council Bluffs identified as Carl Smith was held up and robbed on a North Western passenger train inbound to Ames on Monday evening. He sat with a smooth stranger from Council Bluffs whose engaging manner aided the theft.
A stranger hinted a confidential message to Smith on the platform near the railroad crossing west of town. At the platform he struck Smith with a sandbag, robbed him of valuables including a Chicago ticket, and dumped him to the ground. S Downs a longtime Manson resident and pioneer of northwestern Iowa died suddenly at the Richards Opera House after attending the M E church services Sunday. He was about 63, a member of the church, and left a wife two sons and ten daughters mourning his demise.
The Mississippi River was closed yesterday at noon as an ice bridge formed above the bridge at Dubuque. It is one of the latest closings in years with unusually high water at 2.3 feet. last time the river froze was November 26 at Eagle Point.
Dubuque December 27 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the wedding of Dr I S Bigelow and his wife of Buncombe Dubuque county. Dr Bigelow came here over 50 years ago and has long been one of Dubuque county's ablest physicians.

In Huntsville Alabama on December 27 a family altercation left James Hardin dead after being stabbed by his nephew Jessa Hardin who also wounded John Hardin. Mac Russell then fatally shot Jesse Hardin. All involved are prominent local figures from political circles. The motive remains unknown.
