Fort Dodge Dec 20. J J Higgins a farmer near Castana fought through smoke and flames to save the rest of his family. He dropped a boy child at a window, saved another child by throwing it into the snow, returned for the first boy and found him dead, then escaped with difficulty.
Des Moines police report burglars dynamited a safe at Miller's drug store in Valley Junction early today, securing about $3,000 in cash and checks. The crime occurred in a Des Moines suburb, prompting an investigation by local authorities.
Denver December 20. A mining suit involving valuable claims at Victor, some worth about 500000 dollars, has been filed in federal court. Perry Brown of Lake Mills sues as a stockholder of Mount Rosa Mining Company, alleging mismanagement by Woods Investment Company of Colorado Springs, the principal defendant.
Mat Hunter, convicted of murdering Homer Holland at Mt. Ayr and given life, was granted a new trial by the Iowa Supreme Court. The decision also orders new trials for Phillips and Brooks, two African American men convicted of killing Marshal Sunblad of Lake 12, who were sentenced to hang. Holland was noted as a college athlete with national reputation.
Mayor Marquardt received a warning letter from an unknown writer about a saloon plot to dynamite the mayor’s grocery on Christmas Day. The note, penned in poor spelling on wrapping paper, described two white men and two Negroes as the plotters and warned no obstacle would stop the plan.

Lake View reports an attempted burglary at the bank on December 20. Robbers pried a window, damaged the vault dial, and dug into the wall but left the safe largely intact. They took $25 to $30 in loose vault change, fled on Mr. Needham's horse and sleigh, then released the horse to be found later at the stable. No suspects yet.
Delta news notes another bank to start within sixty days with substantial local support. Stockholders include leading citizens and the bank will open temporarily before moving to a new brick building in Delta next spring.
L W Brand the man who cashed a $60 check at Carpenter Bros for clothing and could not repay it faced a hearing. He was bound over in $1,000 bonds to await grand jury action. Brand was later captured in Minneapolis while staying with friends.
In Dav is county district court, Payne and Somers sue Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad for Irvin Swinney alleging the company filled an undercrossing near Floris blocking stock transfer between two land tracts. Swinney seeks $365 damages plus interest and costs.
Marshalltown Iowa December 20 through Mr Frank Rupert longtime friend and neighbor of Andrew Biddle the farmer once near Lisbon whose body was found near Mountain Home Idaho new information emerges about the dead man Biddle had long resided in the Lisbon area and held ties to the community.

The tale centers on Biddle who left Lisbon after selling a farm and bought a Portland-bound ticket with 500 dollars. He vanished after traveling through Granger Wyoming where his trail ended. His body was later found in a lonely gulch and only 190 remained on him. the missing funds and cause of departure remain a family mystery.
A Sac City woman reports oil seeping from the Coon river banks near Grant City. A quart sent to Ames college for analysis measured 80 percent purity. She has quietly leased 6,000 acres in the area while Pennsylvania Oil and Des Moines investors inspect to purchase the lease contracts. Clarinda on December 20 reports dentist Dr Ferguson attacked a customer who refused payment. The man was struck while in the chair as bystanders intervened. Ferguson appeared before Justice of the Peace Cleveland and paid $15 plus costs for assault and battery.
After months of litigation and a factional fight the Fort Dodge city council awarded a contract for 29 856 square yards of asphalt paving to the Barber Asphalt company of Washington DC. The project including curbing and suffering is estimated at 71 053 04 dollars and work will begin next March.
A council of the Mystic Tellers forms in Hampton. Reports include fines for Western Union strikers in Cedar Rapids, a large attendance at the Southwestern Iowa Horticultural society meeting in Clarinda, and various local notices from Ottumwa to Fort Dodge.

The American Derby to be run June 20 at Washington Park in Chicago has a total purse of 380000 dollars.
New York weekly bank statement shows loans decreased by 23,410,200 and deposits down 5,875 per day. Reserves declined 1,762,100 and surplus fell 292,8600. The extra United States deposits also decreased 284,070.
