Wild Bill Hanrahan of New York floored Marvin Hart in Louisville during a 25 round scheduled bout. Hart’s first career defeat came after a minute and a half of fighting as Hanrahan landed a hard left to the stomach followed by a right hook to the jaw.
President James Whithold of the Western league, returning from Milwaukee, met Fred Cross in Chicago to secure the ball park lease. The unexpired lease runs two years more with hopes for a three to five year extension.
New York December 17 Tom Sharkey began training for his bout with Peter Maher, set for January 17 in Philadelphia. Details were finalized as Sharkey accepted terms from Central Phoenix club management. H C Chrestenson of Hayfield Minnesota says he suffered three years with dyspepsia unable to hold food and bedridden before using Kodol Dyspepsia Cure. Marshalltown reports a Milwaukee passenger and freight train collision head on at Potter five miles west of Tama. Mail Clerk J. E. Carpenter of Columbus Junction died instantly and Engineer Ben Gulés of Perry was severely injured. Seven passengers were slightly hurt. Trains met on a curve east of the station. Air on the freight train reportedly would not work.
Des Moines reports the Chicago and Great Western Railway awarded the Fort Dodge viaduct construction to King Bridge and Construction Company of Cleveland Ohio. The 2585 foot long structure rises 188 feet and carries a single track over the Des Moines River two highways and the Minneapolis and Saint Louis tracks below Fort Dodge. It is the most expensive project on the Fort Dodge Omaha extension and among the world’s largest viaducts.
Des Moines reports that a farmer organized company near Hawarden Iowa plans to file articles of incorporation with the secretary of state and begin coal prospecting. W L Leland of Hawarden, the state pharmacy commissioner, is said to back the venture.
In Webster City on December 17 a district court case C L McCoy versus John Robinson ended with a hung jury. Robinson foreclosed a mortgage on farm implements and a team of horses, bought the property at his own sale for 444 dollars, and applied the amount to the notes totaling 650 dollars. McCoy claimed the property was worth 950 dollars and sought damages, but the jury could not agree on an amount to award.
Des Moines December 17 The Iowa Methodist Hospital association has provided for its $30,000 indebtedness and decided to build a new $30,000 facility on Eleventh and Pleasant streets next summer. First M E church collections yielded strong support, and architect Willis Proudfoot pledged to donate plans and supervise construction, saving about 1500 dollars in cost.
Des Moines December 17. Dr J K Richardson Calvary Baptist pastor sparked a heated ministers association discussion. He argued that the only remedy for incorrigible sinners is to shut them out from the righteous forever, likening them to rotten apples that corrupt the sound. He claimed all tries at rehabilitation have failed and urged delegation of the wicked.
Max Bernstein, proprietor of a Clinton department store, filed in federal court for bankruptcy. Liabilities are $43,776 with assets of $52,907. Bernstein cites inability to convert goods into cash quickly to meet obligations. he has been in business here for four years.
Dubuque December contest notice filed by Thomas F. Nolan Democratic candidate for state senate from the Dubuque district after loss to Colonel P W Crawford. Nolan seeks seat contest bringing two contests before the senate, the other by James B Brive of Anita against Dr J M Emmert of the Cags Shelby district.
State Superintendent R. Barrett has received a communication outlining a program for shells for the schools. The message from a state education group proposes adjusting classroom resources and expanding supplies to match instructional needs.
Greutt of San Diego offers Ro eoia specimens to U S public schools. The gift includes shells and minerals mostly from California. Any public school may receive 100 specimens if they have or will establish a free museum.
Deg Moinés reports last week authorities erected four temporary hospitals of boards in the Tama reservation to house a stove and provide warmth for Indians recovering from smallpox. The cost of care is estimated at about $7,000.
Captain H. F. Ely of the Twenty sixth United States Infantry ordered to Des Moines to relieve Captain Wi S. Scott in charge of the local recruiting station. Ely expected to arrive before year’s end, currently at the Presidio San Francisco.

Sioux City reports W. W. Gillette a Bio ville farmer rode a Chicago North Western vestibule for 39 miles from Onawa to Sioux City in 20 below zero. He jumped aboard late and could not open the door. He hung on as the train sped through three towns, shouting for help before fainting upon being brought inside. Doctors fear permanent damage to his hands.
Funeral services were held in Marshalltown for Rt. Rev. Thomas Lenihan D D bishop of Cheyenne Wyoming who died Sunday. After the obsequies his remains were taken to Dubuque for final interment Thursday. Lenihan died at his brother Rev M C Lenihan’s home where he had been ill six weeks. Born May 12 1845 he was ordained Nov 19 1867 and spent much of his priestly life in Iowa before becoming bishop Feb 24 1897.
In Webster City on December 17 the tax ferret system drew little favor as the district court closed a session with six rulings against the ferrets. Three suits targeted banks across the county and three involved private individuals. The ferrets operated mainly in rural areas last spring, uncovering only modest delinquent tax amounts.
Waterloo December 17 F H Courtright files for divorce claiming his wife has long been addicted to liquor and the couple, married in 1894, face a legal separation petition. He notes the wife’s drunkenness as the offense. This marks the first such county petition on this ground.
Des Moines December 17 voting machine commissioner Beliel states that several machines meet state requirements and can be sold for less than 300 dollars. He warns that Rhode Island’s machine, rejected there, would not fulfill Iowa law and cannot be admitted, ensuring no defective machines enter the state through the commission’s duties.

In Chicago Judge Tuley hears a suit to appoint a receiver for John Alexander Dowie’s Zion lace industries. Samuel Stevenson testifies that Dowie wielded mysterious power over followers, inducing obedience and cursing Moody, who later died. Stevenson recalls attempts to escape Dowie’s influence and Dowie’s claim to be Elijah the Restorer.
State Health Officer Taber reports to the government that six bubonic plague cases occurred in San Francisco from September to November, with three deaths in October and one death in November. Names and dates are given in the dispatch from Austin, Texas, dated December 17.
Keokuk December 17 The jury in the Beird murder trial here has been discharged by the court as it was unable to agree after many hours deliberation. The case was carried over to the next term after the bond had been agreed upon for the defendant.
Blatt T. Coon died yesterday morning at 829 West Third Street. Born December 23, 1860 in Noble, he worked for the Martin-Woods company for years. Survived by wife Kate, brother James B of this city, Mrs. Molise Draper of New Albany, and mother Mrs. Sara Hen ishaw of this city. Funeral Thursday at 3 oclock from the late home.
Mrs Nornenmacher died yesterday morning at 7 o clock at the family home in DeWitt. She was born and raised in the city and had many friends here. Katherine Woeber, born February 2 1868, married Joseph Nornenmacher on June 26 1894 and lived in DeWitt before moving to this city two years ago. they later moved back to DeWitt where Mr Nornenmacher runs the undertaking business. She leaves husband four children aged four, Natalia five, Joseph deceased, and an infant four days old. She is survived by her parents Mr and Mrs Amandus Woeber and nine sisters and two brothers. Funeral arrangements to be announced later.
The funeral of Mrs. Kresenzia Schupp was held yesterday morning with services at St. Joseph's church. Interment followed in Holy Family cemetery. Pallbearers were Martin Aberle, Paul Brant, Joseph Buchmeyer, Henry Tangen, John Cachezell and Peter Wilstermann.
Blasie Richlin died early yesterday at his family home east of Buffalo at age 68. Born June 16, 1816, he came to Davenport in 1854 and moved to Buffalo in 1859. Survived by wife Katherine and children Frank, Anthony, Isidor, and Mrs. Martin Sherrer plus grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at St. Peter's Church Buffalo with interment there. He was in good health days earlier and died suddenly after waking with no warning.
Funeral services over the remains of Mrs A Moritz were held yesterday morning at Temple Emanuel beginning at 10 oclock. Rev Dr Fine schriber led the service with an eloquent sermon. A large gathering attended, and floral offerings were profuse. Interment was at Pine Hill cemetery with pallbearers H Deutsch, Isaac Peternburger, Dr Cantwell, L Flexner, and F G Clausen. Interment was in Oakdale cemetery.
Mrs Dora Rademann widow of Claus Rademann and mother of Policeman Nick Rademain died last evening at 6 30 at the family home 4540 Leonard street She was 76 years old The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 oclock at Celedk
