Wes Moines December 2 The Iowa railroad commissioners issued their annual report praising railway consolidation. It says absorption of smaller lines by larger ones benefits the state by raising weaker lines to higher class, reducing maximum freight rates, and creating continuous mileage for shipments that previously faced multiple local rates.
Des Moines reports the inauguration of Governor A B Cummins and Lieutenant Governor John Herriott will likely be held in the Des Moines Auditorium rather than the state house rotunda. The event is planned for the afternoon of January 1 as per succession traditions and a joint legislature committee will manage ceremonies. Cummins plans to announce these appointments soon and will be away briefly to Crookston Minnesota to inspect land holdings, returning by week’s end.
Des Moines, February 3. H. D. Marshall, a young attorney who two years ago prosecuted saloon cases, has been investigating the courthouse for two days signaling renewed efforts to curb liquor traffic. He told a reporter he intends to bring injunctions against keepers under the tracks and against owners to restrain illegal sales.
Rufus Adams, a Benton barber, married Irene Williams in Chicago and brought her to Michigan. A Des Moines detective claims Irene was previously married to Williams Clendenial and had not secured a divorce. Allegations say she left two children in Des Moines. The detective then pursued the couple to Des Moines and St. Joseph, Michigan, as they remain missing.
Sioux City December 2 Justice Black at Ireton today held W F Reynolds a piano and organ salesman of Sioux Falls S D to the district court with out bonds for the murder of Samuel Crafton Aug 2. Crafton a blind negro preacher was last seen riding with Reynolds. Governor Shaw offered a 250 dollar reward for the murderer.
Des Moines December 2. The 21st annual session of the Iowa State Traveling Men's Association meets in Des Moines next Saturday at 10 am. Officers report, then amendments to the constitution, director and officer elections. Secretary F E Exley cites $120000 receipts, 800 weekly indemnity losses averaging 75 per claim, about $30000 paid in death or accident beneficiaries, and a gain to 14560 members. Since formation, nearly $1000000 has been paid to disabled members and beneficiaries.
Four arson attempts threaten the Harre Paning mills on the north edge of town. Early fires broke out within hours in inaccessible sections, baffling firefighters who managed to quell each blaze. A second and third fires were detected and fought in separate parts of the building with difficulty.
A basement door was found broken and thought to be the entrance used by the fire bugs. The Mills were recently sold under mortgage to H. T. Dankwardt. The structures are insured for about 24,003 dollars, which will cover losses. insurance men are investigating the mystery.
In the wake of universal rural mail delivery plans, several rural telephone firms form to span the county. A southeast line from Iowa Falls toward Omaha with branches will serve over 50 farmers. Another line links to Franklin County named the Iowa Palis and Franklin line. Construction has begun with hopes to install this winter.
A series of fires in Marshalltown on December 2 destroyed E. E. Benedict’s large hay barn, Gantz’s adjoining barn, and the Lunt & Anderson millinery store, with losses near 5000 and 2000 respectively. About 125000 in total losses from nearly a dozen fires in weeks, centered in the factory district, with an unidentified arsonist at large and a suspected maniacal motive.

James Tate an engineer in Muskegon Michigan died when a fly wheel burst at the Central Paper Company plant. The building sustained about $3,000 in damage and 150 workers were laid off for two weeks.

The ad promises a free booklet explaining the disease and home treatment from The Swift Specific Co Atlanta Ga.
Omaha manager William Rourke says peace depends on Western league managers meeting in St Joseph on Wednesday. If they back Hickey and Teebau, trouble may end. if not, outcomes are hard to forecast. Omaha plans to add Joe Dolan Roger Denzer and Hid Speer plus possibly a Detroit holdover next season.
President Young Kday issued a call for the annual meeting of the National League and American Association of Baseball clubs to be held in New York City on Tuesday December 10.
American League magnates met in Chicago to transfer Milwaukee to St Louis and set season terms. London December 2. At Mile End tonight Kid McCoy faced an open challenge to defeat any three heavyweights within four rounds. He beat Dave Barry of Philadelphia in two rounds, English Jack Scales in 20 seconds, and Jack Madden in four rounds, while Jack O’Brien did not respond.
Weinig of Buffalo defeated Billy Stift of Chicago after six hard rounds at the Milwaukee Boxing Club. Battling Nelson of Chicago and Joe Percente of Kenosha drew in six rounds, while Kid Black of Chicago stopped Al Gear in the fourth round.
Louis Barutel of France won the opening game of the international billiard championship in New York tonight at Madison Square Garden. He defeated George Sutton of Chicago 400 to 389 to grab the early lead in the tournament.
Secretary Thrasher of the state Law and Order League reports the McGovern Corbett bout as clearly illegal and asserts a prize fight occurred. He notes Burke’s jaw was dislocated and several teeth knocked out in the preliminary bout, despite attempts to conceal injuries. Tests may be made.
Philadelphia December 2 E Carroll Schaffer of the National Swimming Association broke the American record for 440 yards at the Sportsman show of the Athletic Association in the championship. He won by over 40 yards from H Kollock in 5 5225. The previous best was 6 0135 by Stanley Frerich at the Wiickerbocker Club New York November 19 1900. Schaeffer made 39 turns with a kickoff at each turn.
Sioux Falls reports Jaimes Donegan son of J J Donegan, Aurora county farmer, killed 341 rattlesnakes this season while herding cattle near a den. Town officials pay 15 cents for each rattlesnake, boosting his seasonal earnings by over fifty dollars.
