Washington reports indicate the United States will not yield under pressure from powers over China. Officials stress a principled stance, preparedness to act, and pursuit of Li Hung Chang as a possible peace plenipotentiary while diplomacy aims to avert friction.
London reports continued delays in forwarding messages from Beijing as of August 21. No confirmation of northward advancement. southward movement to clear the countryside and assure communications with Taku proceeds. Foreigners’ districts suffer shells and bombardment. rumors of Li Hung Chang detention fade amid reports of palace fate debated by Japan and Russia.
The 25th signals a hopeful turnaround as a small rescue party reaches Tien Tsin to aid Americans stranded there. The effort emphasizes perseverance amid danger and coordinating groups to ensure civilian safety.
Fifty Americans including Misses Condit Smith Woodward and Paine have arrived from Pekin after five days at sea. The commissary department plans a large winter base at Tong Ku. At Des Moines on Aug 28 the 2:14 pace race with a $500 purse saw Medron take first and Ethan H. second in the second heat while Dr. Pettit won the fourth heat. best time 2:14 with five starters. In the $600 trotting class five starters, Reesland won all three heats with best time 2:22.
Aug 28 Lincoln report Bryan will depart Lincoln for Chicago next Friday evening. He will likely campaign with speeches in Illinois on Saturday though exact towns are undecided.
A Pretoria dispatch dated Aug 27 says Boer lines were broken and the British charge gained ground at Machadodorp with heavy losses to the Boers. London reports Buller’s troops captured Bergendal and a strong position two miles from Dalmanatha. Casualties are feared high.
The battleship Alabama won the title of queen of the American navy after a four hour continuous steaming test averaging 17 knots, a standout showing though below the Iowa. Built by the Cramp shipyard in Philadelphia, she meets a 16 knot contract and near delivers in six weeks before commissioning under Captain W H Brownson. The trial was overseen by Rear Admiral Frederick Rosgers and a board of inspection.
Geo. A. Ling, who saved many lives during the Johnstown flood, was killed instantly in South Chicago when he fell from a Pennsylvania railroad train.
News from Nome reports a pneumonia grippe and measles outbreak among Eskimos reducing their numbers from the Aleutians to Point Barrow. The Lawton carried 220 passengers of whom two thirds were destitute miners funded by the government. Recovery aid and officials, including Rev Sheldon Jackson, bring relief supplies and personnel.
Today in Providence Rhode Island a fast program featured twelve trotters and pacers with one clear favorite winner. Connor won the 2:10 pace while other divisions included a 3:44 trotting class and a 2:25 pacing class with purses ranging from 1000 to 2060 dollars. The meet showcased multiple contenders across seven to eleven starters and highlighted best times such as 2:0454 in the pacing event.

The town of Cartwright Wisconsin with about 2000 inhabitants suffered an entire destruction of its business portion by fire. A sawmill planing mill flour mill and numerous stores and dwellings were burned. Nearby towns sent aid and officials report the lumber yards may be saved. The fire is thought to be under control. Leadville fire destroys Weldon mine causing 60000 loss. engineer dies while miners are saved.
The transport Meade arrived at Nagasaki on August 23 carrying the Fifteenth Infantry battalion, a Third Cavalry squadron, Company E, and a battalion of engineers under TCS A. No casualties are reported. Commander Williams notes orders to sail for Manila with the troops.
After the Gilman hospital riots, four deaths are linked to the unrest. Mrs Dr Wright, brought from Galena, TL, died at 3 pm from wounds. Other injured include John Myers Michael Bran Reasie Salter and Geo Wikloughbr with a fifth possible fatality looming.
The heavyweight bout between Peter Maher and Joe Chovnski at the Broadway Athletic Club tonight was called off due to Chovnski’s sudden illness. A physician hurried to assess him and declared him unfit to fight.
The Democrats of the Tenth district met in West Superior on August 28 and selected F. A. Partlow as their candidate for Congress.
