The funeral of Captain E Weingartner was held Sunday from the West Eighth street home. Fraternal Lodge No 221 A F and A M and other Masonic lodges attended, along with August Wentz Post G A R. A large civic turnout paid last honors to a notable Davenport public servant. interment was at West Davenport cemetery with a Company B firing squad salute.
Prof Gentry presented two strong performances with a troupe including boss ponies monkeys and elephants. Under his gentle training the animals showed notable intelligence in a clean wholesome show that Davenport residents welcomed yesterday.

John Goettsch the Harrison Street loop conductor clashed with S M Thompson after Thompson hurled vile epithets on a Harrison Street car. Goettsch reportedly struck Thompson several times and Thomp son was left bleeding with a peeled nose before being placed in a police cell. Thompson to be tried in police court for disturbing the peace.
At a Rock Island residence on Saturday evening Mrs L J Vandiver attempted suicide by consuming carbolic acid in the dining room during supper. Guests intervened, removing the bottle before she fully drank it, and antidotes were promptly given to avert a fatal outcome.

At 2am Sunday four shots from saloonkeeper Henry Rosenkranz’s revolver aimed at quelling a street riot near Harrison between Twelfth and Thirteenth streets led to police intervention. Rosenkranz pleaded guilty to discharging firearms within city limits and was fined plus costs. Neighbors condemn the disturbance and call for cleaner streets and safer storefronts as they seek to protect property values.
Justice J. C. Hall returned from Crystal Lake where he was part of a camping party of over a week. The DeWitt area resort is growing in popularity as an outing spot with Crystal Lake offering excellent bathing and boating facilities. Other party members returning include Mrs. C. M. Hall chaperone Margaret O’Donnell Anna O’Donnell Moran WicCourtner Helen Hart Clara Hart Bessie Hall and Jack Carmichael Geo Wines L. Roddewig and Joe Carmichael.

Yesterday morning at 6 o clock at St Josephs church Fred N Ruhl wed Agnes Ju Lemburg Rev A Niermann officiated A large attendance included Helen Ruhl as bridesmaid and Julius Schebler as best man After a reception a wedding breakfast was held at the bride s parents home 1010 West Fifth street The couple planned a 10 day honeymoon to Chicago and other eastern cities They will reside at 21914 West Third street The groom works for James F Halligan undertaker The bride formerly worked as a milliner at the Bee Hive store.
The marriage of C. A. Rohde and Miss Cora Flexner was held last evening at the bride's East Eleventh Street home between Iowa and Rock Island streets. Rev. W. H. Blanche officiated. The groom, son of George Rohde, recently graduated from State University law, served in Company B, Fiftieth Iowa Volunteers, in the Spanish war. The bride, a bright, accomplished young woman, has worked in Louis Block's law office. Monday they will go to Sioux Falls where Rohde will practice law and his father will enter wholesale business.
County Superintendent A A Miller said he is busy writing certificates and urged teachers not to delay until Saturday. Most schools in the county open Monday, Labor Day, with Davenport starting Tuesday. A Buffalo three room brick school will not be finished until Oct 1, delaying sessions there. A proposed school north of Walcott has not begun. Walace Nebraska native W F Stichter is new Walcott principal, likely to add high school work next year.
The river gauge shows a strong upward trend with Davenport rising .3 feet since the last report. All stations above Davenport report a rise with some swift increases. At St Paul and Red Wing the rise is .6 feet and Reed's Landing .7 feet. Davenport is now 3.6 feet above low water mark.
A quip on river levels young and old, with social satire about men wearing women's apparel and the idea of improved kitchens and female welfare. The speaker mocks reactions to change and jokes that gas stoves would fix the situation.
