American forces press the attack as Pekin falls after a tough confrontation with enemy lines breaching gates in a multinational assault campaign. Japanese defenses were breached amid heavy fighting yielding a strategic advance for allied units.
Washington reports say international forces including American troops have entered Pekin to relieve the legations while Shanghai sees British, French, German, and Russian troop movements. Washington dispatch reports Brigadier General Barry on Chaffee's staff noting the Indiana transport arrived August 16 and will join the front. Pekin fell August 15 and legation staff are safe as Indiana carried a battalion of the Fifteenth Infantry transshipped from the Sumner at Nagasaki.
Washington reports Chinese minister Wu Ho received an official cablegram announcing allied forces entered Pekin on the night of April 15. The message from Li Hung Chang was transmitted via the Chinese minister in London and confirms the fall of the Chinese capital.

Hinshaw was convicted at Danville in 1895 after a noted trial.
Omaha August 18 Dr George Es Miller a longtime Democratic leader and founder of the Omaha Herald denounces Bryan as insincere and dangerous. He accuses Bryan of attacking established institutions courting class prejudice and seeking power by agitation and socialistic rhetoric.
