In a wild clash, Fitz and Gus exchange heavy blows round after round. Fitz drives body and head shots, drops Gus to the floor in the fourth, and is declared the winner as Gus fails to rise before the count. Referee and crowd note the exhausting, neck-and-neck struggle.
Chicago outplayed Minneapolis at every point as both pitchers were hit hard yet Fisher received strong support. Parker was the steadier until starved of backing as Minneapolis committed five errors leading to runs. Milwaukee beat Kansas City in ten innings as both sides struggled with defense and pitching.
Palestine Texas August 10 W H Brooks received a life sentence in the penitentiary as a principal in the seething of James Humphreys and his two sons in Henderson county in May 1888. Brooks is the third man convicted on this charge. The other two got life sentences. Six others await trial.
In Chicago Bryan plans a series of speeches in New York before the campaign ends. The start date is not fixed but will fall between mid September and mid October. He spent the forenoon meeting callers in his rooms at the auditorium and spoke with Senator Jones Mr Stevenson Charles A Towne and other leaders at the Democratic National Committee headquarters.
The Democratic state convention in Waco adopted and then reconsidered the free pass plank amendment proposed by ex-Governor Hoge. A roll call was ordered and the amendment passed a second time by a good majority. D. Savers of Basbron County was nominated for governor.
London reports Baron Russell of Kilowen lord chief justice of England died this morning after a period of illness and a recent operation.
Pretoria reports Methuen has arrested General Dewet journeying toward surrender rumors. Roberts is healthy and rides daily. Kruger denied plans to surrender in an interview via Lorenzo Marquez. war to continue. Boer bulletins claim a big battle Lydenburg Middleburg with British casualties and burgher captures.
New York August 10 Prof R A Witthaus the chemical expert in the Roland B Molineux murder trial has presented a 318 350 bill to the county for professional services Comptroller Coler calls the demand exorbitant The itemized charges include 6 500 for toxicological analysis of viscera 250 for examining the poison glass 100 daily for court days and 150 for each day of testimony The Molineux trial figures show 2 600 7 850 and 3 100 in separate sections against his work The city had claims totaling 50 176 84 by various specialists and unpaid bills amount to 21 789 67 with 8 687 17 settled and deductions of 1 590.
Scott A NewKown, son of a Pennsylvania millionaire, recently married Dorothy D Studebacker, has been scattering twenty dollar gold pieces in the Palace hotel saloon in San Francisco. He returned from the East four months ago with about fifteen thousand dollars and has spent nearly five hundred thousand in two years.
The Populist executive committee in Chicago calls a national committee meeting for August 27 to address filling the vacancy created by Towne's decline and to ratify harmony with allied parties. Members indicate Stevenson will be endorsed at the gathering.

Washington reports say Chinese minister Wu remains in official relations with the United States though signs of weakness appear. Berlin Aug 1 Field Marshal Count Von Waldersee newly named to supreme command of German forces in China told the Associated Press last evening that his appointment was due to Emperor William’s initiative. He will depart for China soon, most likely via San Francisco, aware of the difficulties awaiting him there.

New York August 10 David B Hill will not oppose Tammany leader Richard Croker further. He told friends he would offer no opposition to any Croker proposed plan and accepts Croker’s control of the convention platform ticket and campaign. Hill's acceptance signals likely loss of hope for Democrats to carry the state this year. Coler will not seek the governorship. Hill prefers Croker take full responsibility for the state ticket.
In Lincoln on August 10 a request pressed Professor Bruner of the University of Nebraska to study a new menace in Central Nebraska. A large green worm attacked beet fields near Hastings, withering tops and drying juice. A 22 acre field was ruined in days as worms swarmed, their species unfamiliar to local farmers. Sugar beets support three factories at Grand Island Ames and Norfolk, which will cooperate with Bruner to find extermination methods.
Gen. Henry L. Bennett returns from Washington after talks with Secretary Root and Attorney General Gries. The criminal charge of bringing stolen funds into the United States will be dropped, an examination pending before U S Commissioner Shields ends, and the civil suit for wrongful conversion proceeds with arrest order vacated.
Okoboji August 10 Ward Witter eldest son of D F Witter Des Moines drowned at 8 AM while crossing Lake Okoboji in a sailboat. He tried to handle sail and steering alone in a gale and capsized. Marion McCarthy Des Moines witnessed the drowning and attempted rescue within feet of the boy before he sank.
Auburn August 10 Tyle Steeple was shot and fatally injured by George Sargent at Grant City three miles from here. Steeple had shown undue attention to Mrs. Sargent, jealousy drove the deed. Sargent not yet arrested. The ball struck Steeple in the back and likely entered the abdomen. He fled after the shooting, and his fate is believed to be serious.
Humboldt August 10 notable community event marked the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs C H Brown on the 7th. About two hundred attended at their spacious home with children and grandchildren present. Guests came from Duluth Hornellsville and Syracuse New York. Addresses were delivered and Rev Mary A Safford of Des Moines officiated with warmth and humor.
Herman Brass, a well to do farmer residing two miles north, was kicked by a large mare while tying her colt. The animal struck him in the side and under the arm, forcing two ribs through his liver and causing internal injuries. Recovery is doubtful.
Mrs. D. Black, about 77, living at 353 Fourth Avenue South with her daughter Mrs. D. L. Moore, died after her clothing ignited from a gasoline stove blast about two o'clock in the afternoon.
An early east bound freight train in Boone found a headless man on the south side of the C. N. W. tracks at Carroll opposite the coal house and another head on the north side a short distance east. The youth appeared 18 to 20, about 5 feet 8 inches, light sandy hair, neatly dressed in a blue serge suit. A light coat lay across his left arm. pockets contained a nickel and a bar of soap. No identity available. The death was believed to have occurred several hours earlier.
Ewart Bros. depart Montezuma for Glasgow with 500 cattle to be shipped from Philadelphia. This shipment completes a total of 1,000 head exported since the first of March.
The Atlantic Trust company sues the White Breast Fuel company and the Iowa and Lincoln Fuel company of Ottumwa in federal court seeking to enforce deficiency judgments and hold stockholders liable for unpaid capital stock. The suit requests winding up of the companies and applying assets to the plaintiffs judgments.
New York Aug 10 Cadet Robert G Higbee of Iowa has been dismissed from West Point and Cadet Allen C Keres of Minnesota suspended for one year from Aug 28 Both first class men were due to graduate next June Higbee faced charges for gross negligence failing to suppress camp disorder and reporting falsely while Keres was cited for intoxication in camp at 2 am on July 4 Minor prior records noted for both men
Woodbury County has no outstanding warrant indebtedness after a financial maneuver by the board of supervisors this week. A surplus of about 30,069 dollars in the bond fund was used to retire old warrants by issuing 39,000 dollars in bonds payable one day after date, exchanged for the old warrants and canceled.
Bonds were issued and exchanged, presented at the treasurer's office, paid and cancelled. Every dollar of the county's indebtedness is now properly funded.
Charles City and Mason City men form a company and pay 50000 for a large tract of timber land in Mexico. They plan to sell the forest and later the cleared land, creating a capital pool to back large deals and enable small investors to participate under one leadership.
A deed filed in Sioux City reports the National Starch Company has absorbed the United States Starch Company. The transfer, done under a prior agreement, ends United States Starch as an independent entity and transfers its plants to National Starch.
Western Union Telegraph company fears unpaid taxes on the Q line railway across town. The executive council certifies the property to the state auditor to collect back taxes, about 5000 dollars this year. The attorney general notes up to five years may be due, potentially 10000 dollars, and the council plans to seek a hearing and possible suit with the attorney general’s office.
Immense Farming Corporation of Des Moines filed articles of incorporation with the county recorder. The Iowa Farm and Cattle company lists an authorized capital of 500000 dollars, 250000 to be issued to incorporators for lands ranch rights and working capital, with the remainder prorated as assets are acquired. Incorporators and directors include Mayor J J Hartenhower ex Governor Frank D Jackson Sidney A Foster W B Wyman J H Winfrod Benson Jackson Lobb B F Longley and L M Sanford with Hartenbower as president Winfrod as vice president Sanford secretary Longley treasurer and Lobb general manager.
Des Moines August 10 the state board of control prepared specifications for receiving bids on 10 600 barrels of flour for the use of state institutions for the year starting October 1. Last year the board paid 3 per barrel and during the contract period flour rose to 4 50 with the state saving about 3009 by buying the entire contract at once. Flour is down somewhat now and the board expects competitive bids. The 10 000 barrels required this year are slightly above last year’s usage but do not cover all grain purchases for institutions as corn meal and other grains are bought by carload.
In Cedar Rapids on Aug 10 a hot windy afternoon drew about two thousand spectators for the firemen's tournament races. West Branch and Marion dominated events. winners claimed cash prizes from $39 to $160 and medals. Team standings included Sheldon, Williamsburg, Audubon, and Marshalltown in various hose, hub, drill, and foot races.
In Tanssvile Wisconsin a collision between a passenger train and a switch engine on the Milwaukee road killed engineer Schlaiter and fireman Bondreth. No passengers were injured.
