London dispatches relay Britain's cipher telegram from Sir Claude MacDonald in Pekin noting shelling ceased July 16 but Chinese positions fired intermittently. Casualties limited, 60 killed, many wounded. refugees exceed 200 women and children. Admiral Seymour reports 12,000 allies at Hsiku near Tien Tsin driving Chinese from entrenched positions toward Pekin. Negotiations pursue China policy with firm resolve to protect national interests.
Reports from Hamburg Berlin and Cologne claim Count von Waldersee has been appointed commander-in-chief of the combined international forces in China. The German foreign office confirms the appointment covers German forces only. others’ command remains unsettled. The emperor reportedly coordinated announcements with other powers.
A Topeka meeting of about 40 Kansas delegates advanced plans for a Mississippi Valley agricultural trust. Walter H. In Denver the Sioux City team forfeited after a 6 to 2 lead for Sioux City in the second inning. Captain Glasscock was ordered from the game for offensive language cited by officials.
In a ten inning game at Omaha, Sit and Joseph faced off with a 9 to 6 result. Pitchers Hughes Wilson and Herman contributed for St. Joseph, while Bling provided offense for Omaha in a tense extra frame contest.

Miss Erlaneck, daughter of the well known engineer G. Rue, died in Todlock this morning at age 25 years 4 months from inflammation of the lungs. She had taught in Davenport public schools for several years and many friends are saddened by her death.
The depot battalion of the Eighth Infantry stationed for months at Fort Snelling has been ordered to depart for Manila immediately.

All bets were declared off as judges found a plan to fix the race to help Ace win at Fort Erie. Driver Miller fined 150 dollars and Kinney, Kenny, McEwen and McCarthy fined 50 dollars each. A young stranger, about 20 to 22, was found dead by the railroad west of Carroll near the coal sheds. The head lay a few feet from the body, suggesting death by a westbound train. No papers or identifying marks were found on the man.

Mrs. D. B. Black a 77 year old resident living with her daughter at 353 Fourth avenue south died after her clothing caught fire from a gasoline blaze. The accident occurred around 2 PM and she succumbed shortly after.
Ashland Oregon August 8 Speaker Henderson of the house of representatives and eight others were badly shaken in a wreck when a Chicago and Northwestern special car on the Oregon express struck the rear of the speaker’s car at Hugo a sharp curve in a deep mountain cut. They were moved to a sleeping car and taken to Portland.
In Woodbine on Aug 8 a 13 year old boy driving grain to a self feeder was thrown when a load swayed. The threshing machine knife injured his arm, crushing and cutting it. Engineer acted quickly, doctor O Conner dressed the wound, and the boy is recovering well.
Two prowlers forced entry at 2 am, struck Father Leidbeck with a hammer, leaving him senseless. He is in critical condition but expected to recover. Citizens vow to pursue the burglars who fled with little booty and remain at large.
Russell Shupe, a Great Western railway laborer employed on a coal sheds gang in Riceville, drowned in the mill pond. The body was recovered about two hours after the accident and sent to his former home in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Judge Wakefield and C A Hamilton from Sioux City heard evidence in a Law and Order league case against Francis and Frank O Conner and A J and W E Heitman for selling liquor contrary to law. About ten witnesses were examined and a temporary writ of injunction was ordered.
City Marshal John 5 Spurr arrested a pickpocket wanted at Sutherland Iowa for burglary of a hotel. A gold watch and other jewelry stolen from the hotel were found on his person. He was bound over in the sum of 500 dollars but, unable to furnish bonds, went free awaiting further action.
Avoca Iowa native Major EB A Consegny past department commander of the G A R died in Manitou tonight Desi Colorado Springs well known in Iowa military and veterans circles was identified by local sources as the deceased.
Marshal Spurr captured a burglar in Sutherland who registered under the name CG M. Smith of Ross Iowa. A $25 reward was posted for the arrest and capture.
Dubuque, Aug. 8 The Standard Lumber company, operating one of the largest Mississippi river saw mills, was forced to shut down today due to a log shortage. The mill has run for about thirty years and this is its first shutdown for this reason.
A freight car brake failure caused a serious Northwestern derailment yesterday morning about 3 o'clock between Lake City and Lohrville near Fort Dodge. Thirteen cars derailed and the train blocked the track until 2:30 p.m. Northwestern passenger service was diverted via Carroll. No injuries were reported.
Section men on the Minneapolis and St. Louis railroad found a crushed Negro body on the tracks south of Lake Mills. The middle aged man was unidentifiable and there were no clues about his identity or origin. The fatal accident occurred yesterday morning.
An investigation continues after two burglars beat and ravished Mrs. Alice M. Johns in bed at her home near Mason City. The deaf and infirm ould woman, found by her bedside Saturday night, was in precarious condition by Monday with nothing of value taken.
Northwestern Iowa faces a looming grain rate dispute as Chicago lines clash with St Paul and Duluth routes over the area’s large corn output. Traffic managers meet in St Paul to prevent escalation while Chicago lines led by Illinois Central and others and St Paul Duluth affiliates including Great Northern and Minneapolis routes prepare for possible rate wars. A hoped resolution may avert all out competition.
