Des Moines reports the executive council wired for a statement from managers of the Manchester and Oneida railroad in Delaware county. The telegraphic report led to an assessment of eight miles at 2500 dollars per mile, a first in such use of a telegraphic report for railroads.
In Fort Dodge on August 1 Martha Lawrence, a weak minded local girl, was lured to Clarion by Jim Bayless Dick Parker and Will Rouse. They offered work with the Bayless family, then enticed her into a bogey and assaulted her in the countryside. The trio, after a preliminary hearing, were bound to the grand jury in 600 dollars each. The men are Bayless of New Hampshire Parker of Belmond and Rouse of Red Wing Minnesota.
Marshalltown August 4 The large Glucose Sugar Refining plant idle over a year is to resume operations soon. Assistant Superintendent L F Harrison said in town Friday that a reopening is expected within a few weeks with no exact date set.
Centerville August 4 John Moore, separated from his wife, took his 3 year old child from the home as police pursued. Officers Moore, Herbert, and Jackson captured him with the child in his arms, the older child following. The youngster was placed in care at the Orange hotel under Mayor Callen. Moore accuses his wife of being unfit to care for the children due to alleged moral shortcomings.
Avoca August 4 lightning destroyed the Des Moines Elevator company's building during a thunder storm. The structure valued at 2000 dollars housed 600 bushels of wheat and corn. Fire department confined the blaze to the single building and insurance will cover the loss.
Jefferson August 4. A bogey runaway near Paton Thursday evening killed Mrs. Jones, who lived four miles east of Dana. She was 83, thrown from the bogey, dragged, and died about an hour later from the shock. Her death marks a tragedy for the community as one of its oldest residents.
Rapid Transit company reports surveyors at work outlining a right of way to Tripoli and plans to extend the line soon. Chicago Great Western track may be used to Waverly from Sumner, and the Tripoli line will connect six stations once completed.
The new Waverly-Oelwein cut-off at Denver Junction two miles north of Denver will remove 45 miles of freight charges for shippers from the city to Great Western points. Goods will be received by Rapid Transit and billed through on Great Western, opening new territory and benefiting local wholesale houses. The Rapid Transit electric line is praised as one of the city’s best investments.
Boone August 4. High prices for labor and materials stun local builders. Several planned large projects have been abandoned as contractors cannot guarantee timely completion due to ongoing labor troubles. The Northwestern railroad had planned new shops this year and delayed work ties to delivery and manufacture disruptions. The firm owns a 260 acre tract suitable for extensive repair shops and expanded round-house facilities. Double track construction to Omaha will require starting work early in the spring.
John Ford sues Matilda Johnson in Johnson County court for 2000 dollars claiming she stole a cat and hid it in a satchel and also alleged she stole jewelry items in a separate statement, with another 1000 dollars sought in damages.
Sioux City Aug. 4 A sensational holdup and shooting in a South Sioux City gambling house operated by Billy Knight ended with two masked men demanding cash from Lou Langworthy and William Langworthy who resisted. One robber was severely shot and may die as gamblers returned fire. The injured man’s identity remains unknown as a Sioux City doctor tends him. This marks the first outbreak of lawlessness since gamblers were routed from the city.
Thomas Thompson, 14, drowned at Clinton on Friday while swimming far out in the Mississippi. Companions watched as he stopped swimming and disappeared, heedless of danger, after venturing far from shore.
Marshalltown August 4 The use of opium for 19 years caused an attack of insanity on Mrs. Mary Abbott a 67 year old widow of Red Oak a member of the Woman's department at the soldiers home Once sane she was discharged from Wankakee Illinois asylum Sept 15 1899 and lately fell ill and was sent to the hospital.
The Rock Island Railroad will span Black Hawk creek with a steel bridge replacing a wooden trestle. Floods this spring and summer washed away embankments and exposed piling, risking a deluge to Waterloo. The 600 foot bridge will restore the original stream bed and provide ample room for high water. delivery from manufacturers is blocked for about a year due to high demand.
