Biggest raft smashed as lumber tow renders near Louisiana Bridge
Report from Davenport recounts the John Douglass bow boat towing a 9 million feet lumber raft down the Mississippi. Collision near the Louisiana bridge capsized the bow boat. raft broke into pieces with as few as 20 cribs intact. Losses projected in the thousands with much timber likely lost or stolen.

Big Boats Visit City as Four Steamers Pass in One Morning
Four steamers the Verne Swain Ravenna Young and Quincy lined at bridges in yesterday’s city visit about 30 passengers disembarked from the Swain. The river traffic list showed boats arriving and departing while roustabouts worked hard amid a busy freight day. Otto Meumann August Stoltenberg and friends hunted frogs, roasting some along the roadside before settling for spring chicken and malt liquor later in the day.
