Aug 2 Harlan graders on the Chicago Great Western rail line unearthed a nearly nine foot tusk of a prehistoric animal in a clay bed seven feet deep. The piece measures five and a half feet, with the largest circumference eighteen inches and four inches at the small end. The specimen may be offered to the state geological society. A separate Sioux City area real estate transfer by J E Himmel totals 15750 dollars for 45 acres near Sioux City, following a prior purchase near Morning Side. Wonona County Institute in Onawa reports strong growth with 165 names enrolled. Des Moines humorist and cartoonist J L Azwickery will lecture to teachers at Congregational church Tuesday evening August 4.
A fatal runaway happened last night at Paton. Widow Jones of Dana, mother of Charles Jones, was thrown from a buggy and fatally injured. Her hip broke and death followed by shock about an hour later. She was 73 years old and among the county’s oldest residents.
Fletcher becomes acting superintendent of the Omaha division starting yesterday in Fort Dodge. The move fills in due to the critical illness of C. K. Dixon at a Fort Dodge hospital. H. A. Flynn will replace Fletcher as Cherokee trainmaster after serving as Fort Dodge chief dispatcher earlier and at Freeport Illinois.
Mrs. Frank L. Marcy of State Center files for divorce, alleging desertion and infidelity. The couple, married in Boone last January, claims the druggist husband has his personal property attached to avoid disposal during the separation proceedings. papers filed in Boone County.
George Saeger, son of Mr and Mrs J B Saeger, previously missing from Boone, located safe and sound today. Local authorities confirm reunion with family. No further details available.
A man missing for some time has been located and is expected to return to the city. Mr Saeger, who was in Omaha, found him and reported he is all right with no reason given for the disappearance.
Muscatine report notes C H Rider near Muscatine sold two fat hogs weighing 1200 pounds total for 87 dollars. Market price was 7.25 dollars per 100. Each hog averaged 600 pounds and valued at 43.50, a top notch for a hog at market, with Rider believing 0 cent corn feeding can yield profit.
F H Hoeppner a wealthy county farmer filed for absolute divorce from his wife whom he married April 16. He says after one month she left home and began to abuse him on the way from the wedding. She allegedly threw pokers rolling pins at him causing loss of sleep and health impairment. He seeks the court’s dissolution and such relief as allowed.
Boone August 2 The Bee Hive store stock has been sold to Moses Simon of Carroll and B Arie of Boone. The stock will be sold out at retail.
Waterloo report says Thomas Aunger, a well known farmer living near Cedar Falls, hanged himself from a corn crib rafter Friday afternoon about 2 o'clock. Long continued ill health was given as the cause.
Peter Hughes, a Welsh-born settler who arrived in the United States in 1829 and moved to Johnson County in 1844, died at his home ten miles southwest of Iowa City on Friday night. He was 86 and left a wife, two sons, and three daughters. He was widely known across eastern Iowa.
A Friday fire in Boone destroyed the Boone Pottery company's plant valued at 6000 dollars, two barns, and part of W. H. Burwell's residence, totaling 7000 dollars. The pottery was insured for 750 dollars. J. G. Holmes is the main owner.
Fort Dodge August 2 Engineer Frank Bender, badly injured in a Fort Dodge yard a year ago when a three inch timber struck his body, sues Illinois Central in Cedar Rapids federal court for $50,000. He says the wound remains open, will never heal, his right arm is paralyzed and his shoulder bears a ragged three inch gash. The petition claims the company made futile settlement efforts in the past three months.
Iowa City group formed a year ago has opened a rest room near the post office offering toilet facilities, reading material, baby carriages, and space for country visitors and weary women and children. A husband wife team staffs the facility devoting full time to care and refreshment, with plans to serve light meals to support maintenance. The movement by the earnest Christian society meets approval and aims to relieve city and rural visitors.
C K Dixon superintendent of the Omaha division Illinois Central railroad is critically ill in Ft Dodge hospital. His illness prompts temporary changes with C B Fletcher acting superintendent and Fletcher succeeding as trainmaster by Chief Dispatcher Flynn of Freeport Illinois.
Deil Austin struck and killed the infant child of John Lynn in Ida Grove last night. The death occurred when the child, playing in the road, was hit by a wagon wheel after Austin failed to notice the youngster. Authorities described the incident as accidental.
Council Bluffs reports a large anticipated turnout for the National Association of Philippines veterans reunion on August 13. A featured event will be a sham battle with soldiers portraying American and Filipino forces.

Dan Patch paced a mile in 2 09 1 2 but faded to finish two lengths behind the winner. Boralma suffered a bad lameness and later a four inch leg gash ended his day. Lord Derby won the fourth heat with Derby later finishing exhibitions and Joe Pointer claiming a 2 09 pace in 2 08. The King won the 2 14 trot in 2 13.
Chicago August 2 John McGuirk wins the Superior handicap race at Harlem track. The event covered 1 1 2 miles with a purse of 2880 to the winner. His time 2 34 3 5 ranks among the fastest races this year.
Captain S. Brown's Hyphen ran an easy race to win the $10,000 Brighton derby at Brighton Beach. Major Daingerfield and Hyphen were close throughout with Hyphen finishing four lengths ahead of Daingerfield and Homestead a further sixteenth back. The 1 1/4 mile race ended in 2:04 1-5.
R F and HL Doherty defeated R D and G L Wrenn to claim the Eastern doubles championship. In singles, W A Larned the national champion fell to William Clothier of Philadelphia with scores 6-3 3-6 6-2 7-5 as the American team prepares to face the English next week.
The Northwestern Rowing Association regatta at Spring Lake Mich closed with Western Rowing Club of St. Louis taking the junior double scull in 10:08 and the intermediate four in 10:50. F J Snittee of Chicago and J L Joachim of St. Louis fought to a photo finish in the senior double sculls, 10:05. Walter Moyers and T D B Duffield of Detroit won the senior pair in 10:34. E B Nellis of Wyandotte won the single canoe in 5:34 and the Nelis Brothers from Wyandotte won the tandem canoe final in 4:47.
In Saratoga on August 2 the Lakewood polo team defeated the Dedham club of Massachusetts to claim the national championship with a final score of 1 1/2 to 7 1/2.
