Pocahontas Iowa Aug 11 14 year old Hila Butler vanished Sunday at 11 a m after leaving for Sunday school four blocks from home. The search widens as townsfolk and friends scour miles with no trace amid sloughs and creeks. She wears a purple skirt and white blouse with a straw hat and pink flowers.
William Goltz of a few miles south of Lansing nearly drowned Wednesday morning when he slipped from a mule on his clam boat while rescuing his dog from the water. Pearl buyer John Lowe and companion Matt Oleson saved him by launching a gasoline boat after realizing his danger. Low’s forgetfulness of his pipe prompted the quick return and the lifesaving effort.

Surveyors have been at work for over a week assessing a proposed electric railway between Lansing and the Waukon iron mines. The Burlington route survey once favored it but abandoned it as a poor investment. Current enthusiasm is minimal, with many calling it a hot air proposition.
On Aug 1 the Knights of Pythias in Towa City showed unprecedented progress and could rank among the greatest Pythian states. Dr. Frank Porterfield of Iowa said Iowa’s membership last year broke records and may exceed 30,000, allowing Iowa to send the maximum five delegates to the supreme lodge and placing the state among Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Illinois in Pythianism.
Ralph Monett, a Coon Rapids youth of about nine, was killed Thursday while attempting to jump a moving freight train near Huxley. He and two companions were seeking to beat their way onto cars. His parents, well-to-do residents, were notified and his body was sent home with his father arriving on an afternoon train.
In Clinton on August 1 the decomposed body of Fritz Schultz, missing since July 17, was found in a vacant house. No marks of violence. Believed to have entered the house and died alone. He was 67 years old.
Mrs Belle Aborn of Waverly was found dead in Harlington cemetery shortly after 7 in August. A bullet wound near the heart and a revolver at her feet suggest suicide. She was about 36 and divorced from Mer cat Aborn of Nora Springs last September.
Assistant State Veterinarian W L Evers reports several rabies cases in William Whitesell’s herd east of Iowa Falls. Three cows have been ordered killed and many local dogs are to be destroyed to prevent spread. The herd is closely watched for further cases and potential additional outbreaks feared.
Cambridge report of Erick Sheldahl a longtime Story County resident died aged 87. Born in Norway in 1815 he immigrated to America in 1847 and became the father of 20 children by two wives. He helped found the early Norwegian colony in Palestine Township, Story County Iowa, in 1855.

On a Wednesday morning near Atlantic the Griffin brothers and their hired man Bishop and his wife visited a show. Bishop promised to return at dusk but did not. Their best male team worth 300 dollars and a load of shelled corn were missing after Bishop left, with corn later unloaded at Maine. Bishop disappeared. his wife says she knows nothing. No prior dishonesty was noted with Bishop.

Patrick Monehan an apparent Des Moines newcomer attempted to hang himself in a Waterloo city jail cell using a rope made from his overalls. Inmates heard the struggle and notified police. he was saved and later jailed for drunkenness. He is about 40 with ordinary intelligence.
A despondent man described as Monehan is the subject of police inquiries. Authorities report no facts about him and cannot locate his name in the Des Moines city directory.
Henry Jacobson of Village Creek near Lansing suffered a severe cut to his left foot while cutting piles. The axe slipped, creating a gash several inches long. Medical aid from Lansing treated the wound with stitches. he is reportedly doing nicely.
Washington announces E. C. Kayton as postmaster at Strahan Mills county replacing Leroy Dixon who resigned. The Internal Revenue Service releases last year’s Iowa collectors report. Iowa totals reach 1,251,166 with Third district 600,841 and Fourth district 650,325.
A Sioux City railway official says Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railway is negotiating to purchase Union Terminal Railway and will extend into the city. Rumor says Guthrie Center extension may reach Sioux City next year, though officials deny any moves.
Waterloo Aug 1 word comes of the death of Mrs P W Sullivan at Sedalia Colo from an auto stage coach accident a buggy horse frightened ran away threw her out and killed her she formerly lived here and was well known to many friends

Fargo August 1 The By-Products company of New York capital two million dollars has absorbed the North Dakota Lag and Fiber companies. It will manufacture paper pulp flax fiber will be made at the plants in North Dakota.
The El Paso and St Louis Securities Company buys coal lands from Williamson County to the Ohio River in Illinois. They plan to build a railroad and develop the mines to exploit the coal resources.
Bradstreet notes quiet trade with good crop prospects and a strong iron and steel outlook. Rail tonnage is favorable though car shortages loom. fiscal-half earnings may exceed 1901. Pig iron still rising, steel output setting records, building lumber and hardware active, exports of wheat corn and other cereals slipping from last year. Dan’s Review cites weather rains in Texas, busy manufacturing, fuel delays, and active retail after summer.
July earnings show a 3.3 percent rise over 1901 and 20.8 percent over 1900 for railways while iron and steel remain prosperous. Cotton goods favor buyers on prospects of a large crop, grain prices fall as speculation wanes, and hides and Colorado cattle hit new highs. Meat demand stays strong with limited relief anticipated.
Washington reports the engagement and wedding plans of Miss Alice Hay and James Wadsworth Jr. They will wed on September 30 at The Fels Newbury NH, the Hay family home. Only close relatives attend, followed by a brief honeymoon and residence in Geneseo New York for autumn.

Spokane Wash August 1 Tracey the escaped convict crossed the Columbia river yesterday heading toward Idaho. He allegedly declared plans to rob an express car to obtain funds to compensate those who aided his escape.
Jefferson City on August 1 reports the Memphis and Chicago Railway is incorporated to build a line from Rennais Missouri, crossing the Mississippi at Thebes Illinois, to connect with the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad.
Mrs. Julia C. Howell of Chicago killed herself with laudanum on Wednesday in Denver Colorado. The body was not discovered until today and illness was listed as a contributing factor.
In the quarter mile dash F J Snite and J J Joachim rowed to a nose finish. The Bohemian Boat club crew of New York led the senior double scull but St Louis pressed close, winning by several open lengths. The Eastern Rowing club dominated the senior four oared event over Grand Rapids. In intermediate single sculls J L Joachim and EB Hess of Western and Century clubs of St Louis impressed with Joachim winning by a short length.
Terre Haute Express reports Gates has been outmaneuvered in Colorado Fuel and Alton control battles. Gates sought board influence, while Osgood and others issued large bonds to thwart him. A Hawley Pierce effort and a Colorado Southern move followed, with voting trusts delaying Gates’s entry. Also linked are corn corner schemes where Gates profited poorly by selling corn to seaboard buyers who later repurchased it from him.
