Flood fighters monitor a slight drop in river levels and improving weather as dikes weaken. Army engineers warn a few more days of rain could raise levels again, threatening River Heights Crescentwood and areas south of the Assiniboine and Red rivers. A breached railway embankment relieves pressure by draining water eastward.
A Winnipeg Red Cross letter offers food for flood evacuees with invoices to Red Cross and requires registration of recipients. Council to report current feeding numbers in Dauphin and seek more details, while asking about insurance on town buildings and equipment. Also sets uniform summer hours with Winnipeg for tourists, approves a marquee ordinance, sewer work hearings, and sewer and water installations with total minor costs.
Roblin High School earns the drama shield for the senior high division with L. I. Spear directing Mooncalf Mugford as best actor. McCreary Women’s Institute win adult division with High Window directed by Lou Kliman. other awards go to Dauphin Technical Institute, Sifton group, Eclipse School, and Emily Pithropt’s cast in Rich Man Poor Man. adjudicator Robert Jarman reports. music sections begin at Henderson school auditorium with Filmer Hubble judging.
A state of emergency was declared in Halifax in 1917 during a critical incident near Staten Island opposite the city’s south end. The event involved a claimed fund of 5 million dollars and impacted a population around ten thousand residents.
The council heard a proposal by town engineer R B Everall to improve streets without immediate paving. Three schemes were outlined with frontage taxes and multi year costs, council preferring curb and gutter with oil and sand and potential paving later.
The park highway through Riding Mountain National Park, closed since spring due to poor condition, officially opened to automobile traffic Tuesday. Truck travel remains banned, and reports from Dauphin say the road is rough in places.

Six year old Georgea Rose Jones of 14 Ninth Avenue S.E. died about 9 50 p m last Wednesday from injuries after a south bound truck struck her on Main Street. Driver Mike Symcych of Dauphin district was cleared of blame. coroner’s inquest adjourned and verdict ruled accidental death. She leaves parents and two sisters. funeral at St Viator’s Roman Catholic church. Riverside Cemetery interment. Sneath’s funeral home in charge.
Dauphin branches of the Manitoba Flood Relief Fund organized a drive aiming at a minimum of 25 thousand dollars. E N McGirr was named chairman with Mayor Bullmore and Reeve Potoski as vice chairs. Committees were formed to canvass town and rural areas with payroll deduction emphasis and a Sunday theatre fundraising event planned.
The past week saw a seven day stretch with all readings above freezing. The low was 36.7 last Thursday and the high reached 73.3 on Monday. Precipitation totaled .33 inches with .20 inches falling last Thursday in Dauphin and .13 inches on Monday.
Evacuees from the Red River flood form a self governing community at Dauphin beach nicknamed evacuee village. More than 250 people from 432 flood evacuees are housed in about 50 cottages. A two room school is planned in the dance pavilion for roughly 90 school age children. Father A Lizee and Lucille Dufort lead the effort organizing committees for food clothing nursing games church services and a post office.
A general meeting of the Dauphin Horticultural Society is set for 8 p.m. today in the town hall. The feature of the gathering will be the distribution of seedling fruit trees to members.
In Dauphin General Hospital training school convocation five 1950 graduates Olive Hooke Edith Smith Evelyn Smith Margaret White and Hope Vacentiuk received diplomas and pins. Dr W G Ritchie served as guest speaker as medical staff offered greetings and best wishes.
Flood evacuees housed in the building supply labor as outside finish work starts last week. By Tuesday crews had about one third of the hall covered with the final asphalt siding, marking progress on the project.
The 25th annual Dauphin-Ochre Rural Field Day will be held Friday at the D.M.C.C. grounds in Dauphin with schools competing for five trophies in parade, softball, points for races, and platform demonstration. Morning events include mass drills and platform demonstrations. a picnic lunch precedes afternoon races and shuttle events.
