The Dauphin agricultural office reports seeding underway late in the week amid weekend rain. Moisture improves conditions with 7.6 inches of rain in 48 hours and good germination of wild oats. Farmers expect a strong growing season as pastures benefit and cattle graze while some use dry feed.
The Dauphin chamber of commerce announces a new policy of quarterly general membership dinners. The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 12 at the Kings Hotel and will feature a general dinner format with a business agenda. A presentation will show scenes from recent Dauphin parades to promote the fairtime parade.
Five Dauphin and district 4H members earned top honors for long time involvement. Audrey Locke will visit Iowa in July on an exchange sponsored by Manitoba 4H. Heather Dewar and Lillian Ritchie received leadership conference awards and trips to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Ron Hrehirchuk and George Geisel gain council awards with exchanges to Nebraska and Ilowa, while Joe Arthurs leads a Manitoba leaders tour July 22 to 25.
The past week was cool and wet with .07 inch rain on the 8th and .76 inch by Monday morning. Light rain continued at noon with a forecast of ongoing light showers and a slight drop in temperatures.
The Dauphin chamber of commerce approved a resolution asking the minister of national revenue to establish a customs office in Dauphin. The copy was sent to MP R. Elmer Forbes and MLA Stewart McLean.
At the 11th annual Dauphin livestock show and sale Raymond McQuarrie of Grandview earned the grand champion steer with a 940 pound shorthorn. Canada Safeway Limited bought the steer for 70 cents a pound. The event featured 165 4H members from 14 clubs and included inter club competition with multiple winners across clubs.
The purebred sale featured Prim rose Paladin 328 sold for 975 to A G Little McConnell, the top bull price in Dauphin. Herefords averaged 533 with six over 600. Shorthorns averaged 428. Aberdeen Angus bulls averaged 550 for two sold by Alowyn Coulter.
The Dauphin-Ochre Area school board has received twelve resignations to date with a May 31 deadline for contracted teachers. Five come from Dauphin composite high school and three from other area schools. New appointments for September include staff at Dauphin composite high, Dauphin elementary, and Ochre River programs along with two intra-system transfers.
Dauphin hosts 11 Manitoba one act plays in the provincial drama finals over Thursday Friday and Saturday with curtain at 8 p m and 2 p m Saturday. Competing groups include Dauphin Best Junior Play awards and top adult honors from regional festivals. Adjudicator Robert Gill of Hart House Toronto and festival chair Alvin Gill of Winnipeg will oversee the competition.
Robert Gill of Hart House Toronto will adjudicate the finals in Dauphin town hall on May 16 17 and 18. Gill born in Spokane Washington trained at Carnegie Tech and taught at Carnegie. He led Hart House Theatre since 1946 and won the Canadian drama award in 1950.
J Willard Monson was elected president of the Canadian Bottlers of Concentrated Beverages reges at a Toronto York hotel meeting in late April. He previously led Manitoba bottlers and served as vice president of the Canadian group for two years. Monson moved to Dauphin in 1939 from Winnipeg where he worked for Coca Cola Limited, later expanding the Dauphin Beverages plant to meet rising demand. The business staffs 15 to 20 workers with five trucks serving a 100 mile radius. He is married to Elsie Hamill of Winnipeg, and they have three children Diane, Peter, and Tom.
The Roblin Anglican Women's Auxiliary won the first Dauphin Drama Festival top prize for Bread. The event, held May 5 in Dauphin town hall, featured five groups with D K Horne as adjudicator and Dr H E Bewell presiding.
CN passenger trains 9 and 10 will make their final weekend runs between Winnipeg and Saskatoon closing a 60 year chapter in local railway service. The May 17 and May 18 finales cap decades of six day service once vital to the agricultural region as highway and bus competition eroded ridership. The Herald notes the service began around 1916 to 1920 with later routing changes and equipment reductions culminating in daytime coaches only by 1960.
Passenger service to the west beyond Kamsack and Canora ends this week while six day per week service continues for Dauphin on Winnipeg to Dauphin via CN trains 63 64 75 76. Schedule April 28 to Oct 26 shows departure and arrival times for Winnipeg Churchill Thompson The Pas Swan River Hudson Bay Kamsack Canora Dauphin and Winnipeg.
The Shrine Circus returns to Dauphin at DMCC arena on May 30 with three performances at 1, 4, and 7.30 pm. Local Shriners sponsor a full program featuring aerialists gymnasts jugglers trapeze performers dancing elephants ponies lions tigers seals and clowns amid cotton candy balloons and hot dogs for a day of family entertainment.
