The 1954 Doughin Regen Drama Festival begins at Henderson School auditorium with three plays tonight and three more Friday, followed by Saturday shows. Winners receive trophies after Saturday’s performances as seven regional groups stage junior and senior entries.
The Dauphin rural municipality unveils a 1958 budget totaling 256,095 up 5,733 from 1957. It adds two mills to the municipal levy to 46.1 and forecasts 116,805 in revenue to balance the plan amid higher public works costs and a planned three year repayment on 1957 overspending.
A Dauphin area board protest against a proposed six room school on Davidson Avenue continues with a town council meeting planned for Monday. The delegation led by Steve Stoyka urged council to intervene, circulated a townwide petition, and criticized the Greater Area board as taxing without representation while calling for a public vote on the Greater School Area.
L. D. McNeill a provincial director of elder housing will speak at a public meeting in Mackenzie small auditorium on Tuesday May 13 at 8 pm. Sponsored by the Dauphin Local Council of Women the session aims to explain how the national housing act funds elderly homes. E. W. Hawkins QC will chair with panelists Dr. C. C. Wright Eric C. Day M. F. Szewczyk A. J. Schmiedl B. Lazaruk Lt G. McInnes Mrs G. Crowler and Mrs D. A. Ross. The event invites all interested in creating a recreation centre and housing project for seniors.
To Speak Here First major political figure to come into the Dauphin constituency for the June 16 provincial election will be Duff Roblin leader of the Progressive Conservative party. He will officially open his Manitoba campaign at the Dauphin town hall next Tuesday May 13 at 8 30 p m.
Dauphin's sixth annual livestock show and sale will be held next Wednesday at the DMCC livestock arena. Seven 4-H clubs enter about 100 calves with seven Shorthorn and five Hereford bulls and three Shorthorn plus four Hereford females. Eight registered Yorkshire sows are expected to farrow by June 20. Calves weigh in at 7:30 am with judging at 9 am. Bulls and females judged by Doug McCausland and calves by Bill McDonald. Sale begins at 1:30 pm with auctioneer J R Blacklock.
A harsh cold spell hits early in the week with two inches of snow on Tuesday and 1.6 inches the next day. Rain falls on May 1 2 and 4 while temperatures swing from a 10.2 degree low to 58.9. Garden greenery suffers as trees begin to leaf.
Dauphin district agricultural representative Dave Hill said soil conditions are excellent or nearly so, with 35 to 40 percent of wheat sown. He noted dry topsoil but adequate subsoil moisture, need for rain to revive land, and risks from wind erosion and forage crop losses. He expects more wheat and forage acreage with slight drops in barley and flax seeding.
Eleven new dwellings led April’s building permit report from the town engineer’s office, with a total of 16 permits for all building and repairs amounting to $81,400. The housing activity traces back to 1953 with few prior spring spikes, and the quarterly total reaches $83,200 as April records help.
Mrs. De Wortman eastern zone director for the Overture Concert association promotes the plan to bring musical artists to communities without financial trouble. The meeting in the DMCC industrial building board room Friday at 8 pm invites all interested in music for the next concert season.
At a health unit meeting in Dauphin the Manitoba association of retarded children plans talks by G. S. Finbow, president, on May 12. He will address the Rotary and Lions clubs and a public meeting at 8 15 p m in the health unit auditorium. Local officials are invited to consider establishing a class for retarded children. Citizens may attend.
Manitoba Premier D L Campbell announces general election for June 16 with nomination day June 2. Returning officer R D Edwards oversees 28 polling divisions in Dauphin as lists are revised and advance poll set for June 12 13 14. Three candidates have been nominated for Dauphin riding A Clifford Matthews Stewart McLean John Potoski. Incumbent William J L Bullmore considers re election.
The DCTI production of HMS Pinafore drew about 600 adults and 300 students from Dauphin elementary schools for two matinee dress rehearsals and three performances at Mackenzie high school. The cast included Gerry Bowes as Sir Joseph, Josephine Werbicki, Ralph Rackstraw Bryan Shaw, and Little Buttercup Lynne Brandt with director Mrs. C N Dahlgren and pianist Sharon Rose King.
Dauphin Chamber of Commerce invites organizations to nominate a local woman to represent Dauphin at the Flin Flon Trout Festival Carnival Queen event. Deadline and details found on page 5 of the issue.
This year s local winner will travel to Port Arthur Ontario on June 1 for the regional Road-e-o. George Robson last year s R R Stark Trophy holder is pictured and returns as a competitor. Entries close May 13 with written tests on that day at 1 30 pm at the Dauphin airport.
