Red Shield canvass postponed to May 21 in Dauphin
The Salvation Army Red Shield appeal in Dauphin totals $400 this week. G H Scott, general campaigning chairman, says the house to house canvass now scheduled for May 21 replaces the original May 16 date. Mrs W K Marsh leads arrangements with Lieut G McInnes hoping all supporters feel satisfied they aided the less fortunate. Citizens not contacted are urged to donate via S J Heggie or to the canvasser visiting Wednesday evening.

The week featured a high of 93 on Monday breaking an 85 degree record from 1949 and a dust filled sky with southeast winds. A late Sunday storm added .04 inch of rain, lifting weekly rainfall to .14 inch. Monday's winds registered 665 miles in 24 hours, among the highest on record with only three prior instances larger.

The Dauphin Beach committee will hold a public meeting at the town hall on Thursday June 5 at 8 pm to discuss Lake Dauphin level problems. Cottage owners from cire Oak a and Sunset Cove beaches were informed, with invitations sent to local councils and groups to attend. The group noted no action had been taken by the water resources branch after a July petition by beach associations and Ochre River council detailing health and recreation concerns from a very low lake level.

The Dauphin Little Theatre entry The Devil Among The Skins took half the eight trophies at the Dauphin District Drama Festival. Dorothy O'Donnell won best actress and Bob McKenzie best actor. Mrs. B Shewfelt was named best director. The play earned best senior play, with other awards going to McCreary and Swan River participants. Final results lead to provincial finals May 29-31 in McCreary.

A Monday wind and dust storm swept through Dauphin causing at least 1500 in roof damage to the Pollen block home to Wings Cafe and Dauphin Meat Market. The storm disrupted about 20 rural Manitoba Telephone System lines and reduced visibility to half a mile with a 500 foot ceiling. Dauphin's heat peaked at 93 degrees as gusts topped 60 mph, while a brief thunderstorm struck Sunday night. The radio transmitter tower near midnight saw an impressive electrical display, but no fire. Repairs were expedited from Winnipeg and service resumed by Tuesday. The Manitoba Power Commission reported no damage to power installations.
