Emergency program to help farmers facing heavy wheat nodding and slow marketing. Prairie grain loans and treasury guarantees for bank storage on farm stored grain advance to second reading amid opposition. The plan would fund about 32.1 million dollars to the Canadian Wheat Board to cover storage charges on large stocks.
Reports indicate Canada will receive large new orders from Europe for export wheat as European crops suffer from severe winter damage. Officials cited France reporting about one-third of its winter wheat crop lost and two-thirds damaged, though exact order sizes were not available last week.
A weekend lull in Europe came with sunlit melting in Italy and southern France while large regions remained under Siberian blizzards. The AP tally reached 842 deaths in the multi day freeze as France and Russia faced melting flood risks and England pressed troops to keep routes open. The matter was referred to the police health and relief committee for further study.
The department of education tells Dauphin town council to raise 40535 this year by the basic school tax levy. The Public Schools Act requires a seven mill levy on the balanced assessment of 5790311 for 1956 to yield 40535. The 1955 levy was 34480.
Town council debated a proposal for a private firm to take over Riverside cemetery to create a landscaped garden cemetery similar to Brandon’s West Lawn Memorial. John Hegel cited cost and care advantages, but council postponed endorsement and scheduled a rural meeting. An installment plan and higher private plot prices were noted, with public response guidance requested.
The John Deere Plow Co. showroom on Second Avenue S.W. opens at 12 noon Saturday March 3 hosted by dealer Herb Lavine. The 100 by 50 foot red brick aluminum clad building features a 1500 square foot showroom with daylight plate glass and white tile ceiling. Town dignitaries including Mayor Stewart FE McLean Reeve John Potoski and J E Burton are set to attend.
The Dauphin town council reports federal subsidy approval in principle from the Department of Transport for airfield maintenance. The plan provides 5 cents per square yard or $5,195 per year, subject to 1956 57 supplementary estimates. An agreement draft will be prepared for council review.
Town council formally approved purchasing the Dominion government property for 16000 dollars. The by-law authorizes the deal after signing an agreement and payment. The site is lot 16 and part of lot 17 9 243. The council also started steps for a 25000 debenture to finance the purchase and renovations for the new municipal office. A ratepayer vote will be needed to finalize the debenture by-law.
Dauphin Rotarians drew 869 attendees over two nights at the town hall in a smooth-running minstrel show directed by Mrs. M G Peebles and musical direction by Mrs. C N Dahlgren. The lively program featured barbershop harmony, soloists, and a two-piano overture with scenery by Morris Swetz and lighting by Hugh Fox as Rotarians in plantation costumes sold candy and drinks to raise funds for community service efforts.
Weather notes show a mild week with only .13 inches of precipitation and several days of snow. Highs reached 21.1 on Feb 28, lows dipped to -19.6 on Feb 22 and -19.4 on Feb 26, with snow on five of seven days.
Approximately 140 fathers and sons attended the Father and Son banquet of the 2nd Dauphin Cub Pack in the United church auditorium on Thursday February 23. Gerald Lepper welcomed guests and Bob Hnatin led the flag ceremony. Rev. D G Ray gave the blessing. Bill Robson toasted the Queen and Bob Cannon toasted the fathers with Ed Wilcock replying. The head table was introduced by George Adams including Mrs J A Ringstrom Mrs R Alf Ernie Erickson Robin Hnatin Alf Buckwold George Adams Gerald Lepper Hugh Fox Bill Robson Ross Neale Chuck O Rourke Rodney Fry. Tom Little saluted his father Ken Little who could not attend. Also present were N J Perepeluk Hans Steeda and Mel Solar.
The Dauphin Rotary club held a Monday meeting to elect officers for July 1 start with George Stott to president and Royal Dicks as vice president. New directors Don Grant and Murray Gamblin join, plus two year terms for Al Bird and Dorland Palmer. Three new members Johan sen Haverlock Blackburn, with Mayor McLean addressing them.
Dauphin Kings overwhelmed the Souris Elks 11 to 4 in the fifth game of the best‑of‑five semi finals at the D.M.C.C. arena to reach the Big Six finals against Minnedosa. Hutchison had a hat trick and two assists, Thompson led with five points including four assists, and Stevens Miller Lopez contributed as Dauphin ran away in the second and third periods. The Kings now travel to Minnedosa to open the best‑of‑seven final series.
The Dauphin Kings and Minnedosa Jets battle for the Big Six title in a best-of-seven playoff opening at Minnedosa. Between ten league meetings the Kings hold 47 goals to the Jets 43 and five wins to the Jets four with one tie.
The Dauphin Commercial Travellers present the Ice Carnival featuring the Dauphin Figure Skating Club in Winter Holiday with two shows on Saturday March 10 at 2:30 PM matinee and 8:00 PM night. The event includes four comedy acts, band attendance, and solo numbers by instructor Missy Georgina Flach.
Henderson school pupils emptied the building during a fire drill in 50 seconds. Five rooms on the second floor and 15 classrooms were vacated in an orderly manner with all 530 students accounted for.
Mayor McLean tabled a memorandum urging Dauphin council to seek a uniform date for local option liquor votes across Manitoba towns. He notes the new Liquor Control act and proposes coordinating with the Manitoba Urban association to minimize confusion and allow full public discussion before any town decision.
Estimates tabled in the Manitoba legislature by Treasurer R D Turner set total expenditures at 69 573 720 for 1956 57, up 172 percent from 1945 46 debt charges. Public works leads with 24 425 635, health and education rise sharply, and capital borrowing includes 25 5 million for power and telephone utilities plus 5 million for roads.
