Margaret Prokopowich Wins 4-H Speaking Contest

Margaret Prokopowich of the Fairville Garden club Sifton won the Dauphin Rally district 4-H speaking contest held at Henderson school auditorium. She spoke on Conservation of Democracy to lead the eight-speaker field and advance to the provincial finals in Winnipeg.

Zaplitny Sweeps Dauphin Race To Record Victory

Fred Zaplitny of the CCF retained his Dauphin seat by a large margin in the general election, winning about 6,559 votes to lead a five candidate field. W. Gordon Ritchie of the Progressive Conservative was second with 3,324 votes. The tally showed a near 75 percent turnout of 21,945 electors, with urban and rural polls showing strong CCF support and a new peak in Dauphin town.

A report received Wednesday afternoon shows a new record turnout at Lennard poll with 173 ballots cast boosting the constituency total to 16 621 votes.

Miss Dauphin Contest Leads With Lorraine Tycholiz

Lorraine Tycholiz leads this week with 10500 votes in the Miss Dauphin contest. Irene Mymko is second with 8500 and Dorothy Wiig with 7500 as Dauphin aims to select a representative for Miss Manitoba at a Brandon parade event. Proceeds fund a Kirby avenue playground project this year.

Nine Nurses Receive Diplomas at Dauphin General

Nine student nurses received their diplomas Friday at the annual graduation of Dauphin General hospital. A capacity audience filled Dauphin First United church for the ceremony as the 1957 graduating class came forward to receive diplomas and medals. Names include Gladys Ann Clow Minnedosa and Mary Thelma Hewson Cutknife and more. The program opened with the Entrance March. Rev D G Ray E W Hawsins stressed the need for a new hospital wing with modern facilities.

Dauphin Fly-in Draws 34 Planes and 33 Wings Awarded

The Dauphin Flying Club staged its largest fly-in with 34 planes Saturday despite weather limiting attendance. Visiting planes were delayed until Monday morning and greeted by a reception committee as 130 attended the Fly-in dinner at Kings Hotel. Wings were awarded to Dauphin graduates by Peter Thompson of Brandon Flying Club. the event promotes civil aviation and aims for an international fly-in in Minot later this month.

Canadian National Railways 21st Hudson Bay Tour Dates

The 21st annual CNR excursion to Hudson Bay begins August 9 with a special train from Winnipeg to Churchill. A second CNR special departs Winnipeg on August 16 as part of the same tour.

Scholarships Won By U Students

Two former DC TI students earned pharmacy scholarships. Hope Mary Negrych of Wenlaw won multiple third year awards including Burroughs Wellcome Canada 150 and Frossi 125 scholarships plus Isbister Max Mains and Merck honors, with a 75 percent minimum. Robert Snodgrass of Dauphin earned second highest third year standing and a 100 prize.
