Pope John XXIII, leader of the Roman Catholic Church since 1958, died Monday afternoon at age 81 after a yearlong battle with a stomach tumor. He guided the church through the Second Vatican Council, emphasized Christian unity, and issued Pacem in Terris before Easter 1963.
Dauphin chamber of commerce dinner meeting on June 12 will discuss proposed Manitoba Telephone System rate schedule changes. A Public Utility Board protest by Mc Girr Hawkins Hirchfield cites a near 25 percent increase for person-to-person calls and urges careful system analysis before any rise. The dinner, at King’s Hotel, 6 30 pm, invites all chamber members to attend.

Dr J Robert Duncan of Darlingford a 1963 Ontario Veterinary College graduate Guelph is now with the Dauphin Veterinary clinic He and his wife Sheila Schmidt will reside in Dauphin Dr J N Smart of the Dauphin Veterinary clinic has completed an intensive cattle disease refresher course at the Ontario Veterinary College The program drew doctors from Ontario Quebec the Maritimes Western provinces and the United States
At the Lieut Col Barker VC inspection the 50th Air Cadet Squadron presented twelve cadets with graduation certificates and several efficiency and long service awards. WO Brian Steffler earned the Barker VC award and marksman honors. Flt Sgt Jack Kienlen won a flying scholarship. Pat Coghlan led the presenting of certificates as crowds viewed the parade and parachute display.

Public invited to witness ceremonies, two Master cadet awards, survival first aid and drill demonstration, and displays of small arms.

Bernard Gaster of Dauphin becomes superintendent of equipment for Saskatchewan. Lawrence Worobey, formerly assistant superintendent at Saskatoon, is named Hudson Bay area equipment head. Gaster succeeds J L Smith retired. Worobey succeeds Mills as assistant supervisor of motive power at Winnipeg.
Report from a town tour notes that many tent caterpillars died from recent snow and cold, with fewer active nests found on cotoneaster and fruit trees north of town. Experts warn to stay vigilant for fruit trees as some pests remain on choke cherry and plums despite the chill.
Stewart Wilson, a 25 year old Dauphin born pilot, was found dead in the wreckage of a TransAir Norsman plane that crashed January 22, about 65 miles northwest of Pickle Lake Ontario. A 16 day search by TransAir RCAF and private craft covered 160000 miles in the Caribou Lake bush. Funeral services are planned for June 5 at the Gilbart chapel in Selkirk.
The Manitoba government has mailed about 380 000 renewal applications for drivers and chauffeurs. Hon Sterling Lyon reports 45 549 renewals already received by the motor vehicles branch including 34 476 by mail and 11 073 at the Portage Avenue office. Licences can also be renewed at 113 agencies province wide.
The transfer of Superintendent John A. Stevenson from Dauphin to Nelson B C was announced by Chief Superintendent J S Cruickshank. Stevenson will be officer commanding of the Nelson sub division and is to be replaced by Inspector F W Johnson from Nelson. The move is expected to take effect early in July.
PFRA deputy director H. J. Hargrave announces annual meeting dates for community pasture patrons. This Thursday June 6 the Dauphin Ethelbert pasture gathers at 2 p.m. at the Sifton community centre.
Postmaster W J Quick says the new truck mail service improves delivery but only if patrons meet set deadlines. The office closes at 5 or 6 pm with adjusted mail in by 5 30 pm and 6 pm respectively to keep 7 pm closing for emergencies.
