Manitooba Schools Orchestra Thrills Dauphin Audience

The Manitoba Schools orchestra visited Dauphin delivering a music appreciation program for about 1,100 children at Henderson school and in the town hall. Trombonist Ed Balchen and clarinetist Dr Vern Watson joined, Moyra Wilson dazzled with Mendelssohn, Chopin encore delighted, and plans for local string instruction were discussed by CKY’s Herb Roberts.

Monster auction date set for June 19 at DMCC grounds

The Dauphin Memorial and Community Centre announces a monster auction sale for Saturday June 19 at 1 p.m. at the DMCC grounds. Proceeds support centre programs and community initiatives.

The Canadian council of boys' and girls' club work awarded leadership honors to Mrs. Sawehuk Fork River Mrs. Art Fraser Grandview Don Dunfield Mountview and Russ McKillop Dauphin Plains. Mrs Sawehuk led the Fork River sewing club seven years Mrs Fraser led poultry and sewing clubs at Grandview since 1942. Dunfield organized Mountview swine club in 1940 and has led since. McKillop led Dauphin Plains swine club five years and will pass the leadership to his father John A McKillop.

The Dauphin Ochre area board approved a fifty dollar grant for teachers attending summer school this year. The grant, decided at the May 19 meeting, aims to encourage participation and applies only to those under contract for the 1948 49 terms.

Linda Meyer of Gilbert Plains wins first prize and Adele Fitzgerald of Dauphin second in a Travellers Amateur Contest broadcast from the town hall. The event raises over $1,000 for the Canadian travellers fund with entries from Gilbert Plains Winnipegosis Ste Rose Ste Amelie Grandview Sifton and Dauphin. CKX announcers George Kent and Ken Milton hosted the 10 15 pm to midnight program broadcast by Brandon ACT and Dauphin Travellers.

Dauphin col legate enters 25 boys and eight girls in the provincial meet at Brandon on June 5 with entries across ten boys events and seven for younger classes. Dauphin Feats New Buildings And Modernizing Projects

Dauphin sees about 12 construction ventures ranging from a brick front upgrade on Buckwold’s Main Street to a new Specialty Dry Cleaners on Front Street East. Rebuilds include Central Motors on First Avenue and a large Consumers Co operatives storage expansion. A second Manitoba pool elevator rises near the present one while the D.M.C.C industrial hall advances toward roof completion. New hotel alterations, a six lane bowling alley in the New Main snooker building, and a Robt Hawkins one story brick office building on Burrows Avenue round out a busy modernization drive.

Area board weighs addition to Ochre River school

Area board considers adding two rooms to the existing two room Ochre River school to replace the one room and the town pupil use. Architects and local boards met last Thursday to discuss costs and financing amid opposition to closing the local high school and sending students to MacKenzie in Dauphin.
