The Herald prints staff take two weeks off from Aug 7, with most of the department scrummed for holiday. Marcel Jules and others head west on motor trips while front office operates on skeleton staff and Blanche abroad for two months. Aug 14 issue planned. Aug 7 issue canceled.
The Dauphin town council by bylaw approved Maple Leaf Construction Ltd for asphalt paving this year with work to start by August 15 and prices set for priming oil hot mix and sealing oil. The meeting also accepted Powell Equipment for a truck mounted hydraulic backhoe at 16141.71 dollars and referred an Allard Motors tender for an equipment carrier van. A policing agreement with RCMP increases force to seven, with per man costs outlined for 1963 64 and the town's contribution detailed.
Local building activity in Cuphin shows six month totals near $521,325 with 54 permits issued up to June 20, compared to $520,577 on 56 permits in 1962. Home construction leads, with 24 new dwellings accounting for $279,500 of the half million valuation.
High school exam marks are issued and students writing supplementals can obtain texts from Principal Norris Aitken at the Dauphin Collegiate on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Supplemental exams begin August 20 with tests for Dauphin Ochre area students at the Dauphin Collegiate. Brandon College offers a three week course for special instruction.
Sergeant Paul J. Magailas of Dauphin and Edmonton receives the United Nations Congo medal from Col. D. G. Green at a Leopoldville parade before departing for Canada by RCAF airlift. An administrative sergeant with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, he helped maintain UN communications in the Congo. His wife Isabel and child reside at 13440 114 Street, Edmonton, Alta.
The report covers a cooling trend from 90s to 80s with 81 degrees on the 25th. A .15 inch rainfall early on the 25th brought relief from heat despite storms. Holiday readers are urged to enjoy the milder conditions.
The Dauphin Horticultural Society announces its annual gladioli and arrangement show at Allard's garage display room on Friday August 16. Entrants may submit any number of single gladiolus spikes for one prize each, with miniature glads now judged in a separate class. Exhibits include two arrangement classes for one or more glads viewed from all sides or one side, with entries in by noon and reception from 9:30 am. For details call Mrs. J. M. Douglas at 638-4214.
The Dauphin Collegiate will offer a new general course this fall extending over three years. It aims to develop individuals as workers and citizens with strong English mathematics science and social studies foundations. The program includes English social studies mathematics general science physical education guidance general business industrial arts for boys and home economics for girls with texts stressing Canadian authors and practical aims.
The Provincial Fruit Show will be held in the DMCC exhibition building on Friday August 23. Prize list offers up to 45 entries and 14 specials. nurseries and government institutions cannot enter. Exhibitors may enter multiple fruit categories with size and entry rules noted, and displays must be fresh fruit grown by exhibitors. Exhibits must reach Dauphin by August 22 with prepaid shipping to the secretary treasurer Mr. P. J. Peters.
Dauphin based No. 50 Lieut-Col Barker VC led the RCAF Station St. Jean summer camp squad to the athletic trophy after sweeping all camp sports in a two week event. The 27 Dauphin cadets outperformed 547 peers under S/L D Kells F/O B Wood and F/L Ed Wilcock.
Dauphin prepares for two August Churchill excursion visits on Aug 9 and Aug 16 with civic groups and the IODE serving refreshments after a station garden reception. Cars will tour local points of interest, and a floral welcome awaits at Allard's showroom while civic and chamber officials greet travelers arriving by special train from McCreary.
Valley River nurseries founded fifty years ago by William J. Boughen on 40 acres near the village north of Dauphin. The business grew from a large garden to a flourishing operation with fruit trees strawberries perennials and roses. A new greenhouse and root cellars aid production and winter stock readying customers for spring.
