The Northern Manitoba Good Roads Association lists entrants for a road dragging contest along Ashville road and adjacent ranges. Death of H M Chute Pioneer Farmer of Dauphin

Herbert M Chute an early Dauphin district farmer died Monday July 20 born September 12 1854 in Aylmer Ontario. He married Ruth Conner in 1877 and worked as a blacksmith in Vienna Ontario before farming in Leola and Sheha Saskatchewan then Dauphin from 1894. Survived by wife two daughters Grace and Stella and six sons Edgar Frank Fred Lee Stanley Archie. Elgin predeceased him. Funeral Wednesday at family residence with Rev W Bowman. interment Riverside cemetery with six sons as pallbearers.

A Dauphin Horticultural Society meeting Monday evening had five attendees, not enough to transact business. The meeting adjourned to Friday the 24th, and if no further interest is shown the society's activities will be indefinitely suspended.

Forest Rangers Train at Riding Mountain Reserve

Forest rangers from all province reserves convene at Riding Mountain Forest Reserve for a training school led by Mr. D. A. McDonald, Winnipeg Forest Superintendent. About twenty rangers take the course at mile 5 on Strathclair Road as a muskeg road project near Audy nears completion for traffic within a week.

Interim payments discussed for Wheat Pool final payment

Head Office informs delegates that July 15 cut off may delay final prices for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. If August 1 delivery cannot be guaranteed, a substantial interim payment may be issued by August 1, with a final payment later at the end of August after settling about 140 wheat grades.

Manchuk escapes hospital recapture leads to new charges

Nick Manchuk of Cowan escaped hospital grounds after a fifteen month sentence for freight car burglary. He was recaptured at his Cowan home two days later and charged with escaping lawful custody. He later received a two year penitentiary sentence. Wm. Moore of Ste. Rose faced indecent exposure charged by Magistrate Rheaume. case remanded. Albert Waddell of Gilbert Plains was tried for indecent exposure common assault and illegally obtaining liquor. guilty and fines imposed.

Northern Manitoba Tennis Championships Readied with New Trophies

The Dauphin club announces readiness for the Northern Manitoba Tennis Championships with new prizes, a silver trophy for men singles, and Palmer cup trophies for all singles events. Members urged to enter multiple events by Saturday 6 pm and support the junior singles for under 19 entrants.

Bowling under electric lights boosts local league action

Bowling continues as greens gain electric lighting and evening play proceeds with group standings. Group one sees Conner on top with one loss while Esplen and Wilson follow. Group two led by Vasbinder and Steen. Weather deferred games to be played Thursday and Friday with playoffs starting the 27th and a new draw posted the 28th. A July 17 general meeting at town hall set by laws and club officers including President A E Warren and General Manager Canadian National Railway Winpelie.

The Dauphin Country Club ladies concluded the Hidden Hole competition with Mrs. Walker posting the lowest score on holes 1 3 and 7. Club championship first round set for July 30 with 18 holes eightteen to qualify. records due by Aug 3. Draw lists 16 pairings and reminders to members about dates and partner arrangements.

Dauphin Old Timers Association schedules its annual picnic for next Monday July 27 at Dauphin Beach. The event will feature a grand reunion of early settlers with sports and a large noon day meal. Barn dance tires vanish and a stranded motorist tale

A few nights ago at a barn dance several spare tires disappeared prompting owners to stay alert. A motorist later ran out of gas on the old road after a lake visit and a beach outing, then walked miles into town after cars passed by without stopping. Some advise carrying extra gas.

Salvation Army Captain Returns From Five Mission Tour

Captain Geo Fugelsang of the Salvation Army returned from a five stop district tour over the weekend. He was joined by drum major Dad Shaw and colleagues H Honeysett and Wm Baxter in a Ford. They visited Millwood Binscarth Foxwarren Birtle Russell Silver Beach Dropmore and McNutt, facing mosquitoes and rough beds yet reporting warm receptions. A 400-strong Silver Beach camping crowd heard their message and songs.

Local Fire Brigade Responds To Two Weeknight Blazes

The local fire brigade answered two calls last week. Thursday night a blaze on 1st Avenue S.W. was fought and a portion of the frame building saved. Friday a fire behind the laundry caused delays when hose connections failed and the nozzle blew off, with the structure badly damaged and efforts focused on saving neighboring properties.

Wilbur Fisher of Shortdale is patient after injuring an eye. Baby Clifford Heatherington of Bowsman underwent surgery for mas toidites this week. Dorothy Green of Grandview had appendicitis operation and is progressing well. Mrs. Chas Baker of Gilbert Navis is a patient for a few days. David Morgan of 2nd Ave NE is being treated. Mabel Gunn of Ochre River had appendicitis surgery on Tuesday.

Dam Safety Review Leads to Immediate Repairs

Councillors town superintendent and bridge engineer E W James visited the dam on Tuesday to inspect damage from the June floods. The council seeks permanent repairs including new spillways large enough to handle excess flow and reduce future damage. work will start once a reconstruction plan is approved.
