Citizens adjust to mayoral election as three candidates Malcolm Palmer and Smith campaign over local issues. Voters prepared to hold representatives accountable and demand decisive town leadership. A remse prise Friday e 30th.
A debating league formed by Normalites Collegiate and the Brotherhood and Sisterhood of St James Presbyterian Church has drawn up a three event schedule. The first debate on February 6 at 1:39 p.m. in Mackenzie School auditorium debates Resolved that strikes are beneficial to the laboring class with Kane supporting the affirmative and Collegiate the negative. The schedule continues February 20 Normal versus Brotherhood and Sisterhood and March 6 Collegiate versus Brotherhood and Sisterhood.
The season opener masquerade was held Monday in Pollen Hall under Ss. O. B. auspices. Costumes were varied and striking with prizes awarded to Miss C C Thompson for Lady’s fancy, Miss M Lane for Yady’s comic, Jack Whitmore for gentleman’s fancy, and John Bull for gentleman’s.
John Gardner spoke last Wednesday on tailoring at the Rotary Club as it continues vocational talks for Collegiate students. Roy Watt discussed Forestry and Harry Crimes spoke on Banking. Frank Simpson and Walter Rogers are scheduled this week on Law and Medicine respectively.
The Local Council of Women will meet in the Heat Room on February 2. The program is run by the committee on Better Laws for Women and Children. Mr. J. N. McFadden will address the ladies on a topic related to the subject.
R. C. Smith appeals to Dauphin voters outlining 21 years of residence and municipal service including five years on the School Board seven years with the Dauphin Board of Trade and secretary treasurer. He promises sane economical impartial town management. A public meeting at GWVA Hall Friday evening features speakers Mr. Geo. H. Palmer and Mr. R. C. Smith.
A Dauphin Theatre audience enjoyed the Northern Manitoba Permanent Players production Mrs Temple's Telegram on January 21. The review praises the cast led by Dorothy Lee and Mrs Wilkins with Bateman as Jack Temple and notes strong acting, lively staging, and audience laughter throughout.
A Dauphin candidate for mayor outlines credentials as long time resident and business man. He cites leadership on the Electric Light Plant and Water Works committees, five years on council, four on the School Board, and plans for wise economy and lower taxes while keeping an open, courteous approach to inquiries.
A community drives support for a local war memorial fund with an Elks Box Social and Dance. The event, led by Dan Hamilton, aims to raise money as Canada’s war dead are honored, with prompts for attendees to bring lunch boxes and bid in an auction.
G H Palmer urges Dauphin electors in a public letter to back his mayoral bid. A meeting is set for January 30 at Great War Veterans Hall, polling on February 2 from 10 am to 5 pm.
The Junior C.G.L.T. girls of the Presbyterian Church host a silver tea in the church basement Saturday from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Funds support their activities. Come and support the girls.
A masked bandit stopped mail carrier Thomas Jordam near Meeting No. 10 and seized a registered bag containing $500 in cash and other valuables. Police quickly pursued clues but made no arrest as the incident exposed weaknesses in nighttime mail security.
A town gathering at the Anglican Church basement featured Mr. Stewart of the Retail Merchants' Association outlining Boys Work Board activities and the Taxis movement. He urged churchmen to guide youth toward wholesome occupations, aiming for physical mental spiritual and social growth. W. J. Henderson of Dauphin was named to a resolutions committee for Manitoba Educational Association’s 20th annual convention at Easter.
The eighth Choral Society concert at the town hall impressed Dauphin with Bennett's May Queen. Soloists Nina Ferguson Dempsey Dorothy Cairns Victor Scott A T Hay showcased strong voices and musicality while Mr. H S Beetham led a unified ensemble. Mrs Hamilton supported the piano and accompaniment.
A 500 Card Party will be held in the G W V A Hall on Thursday February 5 at 7 35 p.m. Admission 35c. Refreshments. Want ads are winners.
On January 23, Metro Hutchen of Ethelbert faced Judge Bonnycastle for assault and grievous bodily harm and received a suspended sentence. Joseph Ward of Lonely Lake was charged with theft and sentenced to one month, with an additional month for possessing stolen goods. The sentences run concurrently. Provincial Police handled both cases.
At the first meeting of the school board held last week the organization was effected. Chairman H. F. Bewell became chairman while R. M. Cardiff was secretary-treasurer. Committees include Management with Bewell Macneill and McFadden. Supply with Smith Bewell Boles and Miles. Heating and Fuel with Malcolm Smith and Miles. Finance with White McFadden and Malcolm. Building and Grounds with Macneill Gorby and White. Van-Gorby Boles and Spencer.
A well attended meeting in the Hopwood Block Rest Room formed the Dauphin Radio club for mutual help and radio art discussion. H. W. Hopwood chaired, elected president, with H. U. Green as secretary. Meetings set for the second week each month. aims include broader membership among radio owners in Dauphin and district.
The Dauphin School Trustees association will meet at the Town Hall on Saturday February 14 at 2 30 p m. William Iverach will address and assist discussion. The executive urges full district representation and public attendance at this educational event open to all interested.
