The Lieut Stuart Wilmever chapter hosts a New Year’s Eve ball in the town hall. Roses hang from chandeliers and a rose garden stage houses a fine buffet supper. J W Johnston presides as master of ceremonies with McMurray orchestra while guests dance to waltzes fox trots and one steps culminating in Auld Lang Syne.
Two prisoners Roy Smith and Wilbert Birchall attempted to escape from the provincial jail while chopping wood when an axe handle broke. Guards pursued through scrub to Geo Buchbannen’s farm and river, then mounted police joined the chase. They were captured a few miles out, offered no resistance, and will face the magistrate today.
Vermillion Lodge No. 68 A F and A M installed new officers for the term during St Johns night ceremonies. Master J W Johnston led the ritual with staff of past tasters guiding the event. E Mayo was installed W M with W R Buchanan as L P M and H E Frazer as S W.
The Rev Canon J O Murray of St John’s College Winnipeg will preach at St Paul’s church on Sunday morning and evening on the Forward movement. A longtime professor of systematic theology, he enlisted in 1916 with his students in the 11th Field Ambulance, served in the trenches, recovered from trench fever, then became chaplain at Epsom Convalescent Hospital and served in France and England.
A collection of local notices from Dauphin Manitoba items include trainmen ball dates church conferences millinery classes January events and a sequence of marriages engagements and births with names and places such as Winnipegosis Swan River Gilbert Plains and Dover England. Also theatre tariff changes and a town hall dance with McMurray Orchestra and contact notes.
The curling club faces scarce rink space with 2c rinks barely allowing two games weekly per roster. Plans to add more ice within a week will be discussed and backed by members. A new Trimble Trophy is underway with a shield donated by N.G. Trimble for yearlong possession by the winner. Prizes are offered for first and second in the competition. In a Cruise Shield match Gilbert Plains lost by three points, Steen 16 Shepherd 16 Eagle 12 Frazer 9. Plains corners vow another try tonight.
The town council met at 10 am on Tuesday to organize and appoint committees. With Mayor Malcolm and Coun. Jordan absent, D D McDonald chaired. Committees named include Finance Public Works Water and Light Health Relief Fire and Police. The council adjourned to meet again Thursday January 15.
The district lists new teaching placements including Sulphur Creek Alma Castle and Gilbert Plains Helen Shaw, Melton Annie Leslie, Bowsman Alma Patterson and M Silverwood, Kenville Eleanor Parkin, Listower Maud Brinkman, Laurier Olive Ames, Fairville Lila Douglas, Markham Lorne Garbutt, Mountview Howard Garbutt, Comrie Gordon Malkovitch, Onukrania Hnat Piatsko.
Tonight at six o'clock a men supper will be served in the Presbyterian basement for one dollar per plate. The gathering will feature Mr. G. H. J. Russells of Winnipeg as the speaker. All men are invited to attend.
Mrs. Benedickson will not receive on Friday the ninth. Mrs R M McCanl will receive on Friday after noon January 16 from four to six o clock and not again this season. A silver tea and sale of home made et will be held Saturday Jan Ivih at the home of Mrs. Tritsehler 722 Main street north. Given by Mrs Grover Smith and Mrs Tritsehler in aid of St Viator's church.
