Heard Wins Novelty Bonspiel At New Curling Rink

The novelty bonspiel opening the new curling rink and the 1973 79 Doughlin Curling Club season closed Friday with William Heard defeating Stanley Phillipe by five points. Heard’s rink included Walter Hunter and Earle Smith. Phillipe’s team featured Jack Williams Jack Wallace and Irvin Vasbinder. Thirty eight rinks entered as mild weather stretched play over two weeks. consolation reduced to Archie Chute vs W Bottom.

Death of Ellis Cash and Carry Grocery proprietor

George Eis owner of Ellis Cash and Carry Grocery was found dead Christmas night in a lane near Main Street. Initial signs suggested possible foul play but coroner’s jury later indicated death likely from heart failure. Police reported he left home about 2 pm and was not seen again. $300, some checks, and his watch were found on the body. The inquest was adjourned to Thursday at 1:36 pm.

Car collision reports on Christmas Eve and Day

At 11 15 p m on Christmas eve a collision occurred between two cars at 3rd Avenue and Main St N one driven by Harry Mumo of Ashville and the other by W McCiernon The rear fender of the latter car was broken but no for damage nor personal injuries on Christmas day at 130 pm a McLaughlin car driven by Ben Silver wood was badly smashed at the inter section of 4th Ave St W and Gladys street when I was in collision with a car driven by Fred Young

Skating Rink Opens with Band Nights and New Year Hockey

The skating rink opens with a schedule like last year. Band nights occur on Tuesday Thursday and Saturday. New Year’s afternoon band skating and New Year’s night hockey match feature the Christmas day tie teams. It should be a good game.

Lawrence Bonnycastle Rhodes Scholar for Manitoba 1929

Lawrence C. Boenmpcastie son of Dauphin judge Bonnycastie was chosen Manitoba Rhodes Scholar for 1929 by a Winnipeg committee. He attended Dauphin Collegiate at 14, studied at Trinity College Port Hope, then the University of Manitoba, played on the debating team, and held several student leadership roles including Arts athletics president and editor of Brown and Gold. He also served with the Canadian National Railways in Alberta.

St James United Church choir under A Marshall Neal presented Christmas numbers at morning and evening services. Soloists Mrs Lottie McNab Miss N Playford and R P Eastman led festive selections including He Shall Feed His Flock from The Messiah. Grace United followed with a 27 voice choir under H A N North for Break forth into Joy and The First Noel before adjourning to the back page.
