Robertson Gets 2 1/2 Years For Arson

Robertson J. Robertson, 21, of Ochre River, pleaded guilty to arson after an acquittal on first degree murder. He was sentenced by Mr Justice Dysart to two and a half years in Stony Mountain penitentiary for setting fire to Gilbert M. Wilde’s cabin on February 24 after striking Wilde with a firewood stick. The judge noted the crime’s seriousness since Wilde lay unconscious in the cabin when burned.

Eight-year term for attempted murder of wife at farm

Napoleon Poulin was sentenced to eight years in Stony Mountain penitentiary after being found guilty in the Court of King's Bench of attempted murder of his wife. He slashed her with a razor while she slept on Sept. 12, with the attack witnessed by their daughter and son-in-law.

Lagoski Sentenced to Death in Gilbert Plains Case

Mike Lagoski was found guilty of killing his wife on July 10 at their Gilbert Plains home. Judge Dysart imposed the death penalty with mercy recommendations from the jury and will forward the sentence to Ottawa. The motive cited involved a rage act on the farm last summer. Lagoski's eight year old daughter testified about alleged illicit relations. C A Rogers prosecuted for the crown and Alex Katz defended Lagoski.

J Whitmore Farm Home Destroyed by Fire

A fire caused by an overheated stovepipe destroyed John Whitmore’s farm home on the outskirts of town. The family, dining inside, saved only clothing and a few belongings as snowbound roads kept the fire brigade from reaching the scene in time. The dog alerted the family, and burning shingles burned the animal. Whitmore now has no house or barn, the latter having burned two years earlier.

Ochre River Honors Girls in National Poultry Contest

Ochre River and Dauphin Agricultural Society honored Mary Bottrill and Kathleen Phillips for winning the National Club Poultry Contest at the Royal Canadian Agricultural Exhibition in Toronto.
