Top honors go to JH Delong at Dauphin show

The 13th annual Dauphin Horticultural Society show drew 502 entries from 44 exhibitors. JH Delong won multiple amateur championships and cups, including the Rotary Club silver cup and the Alex Wallace gladioli cup. Margaret Sumpter retained the Dauphin Herald Rose Bowl in the children’s section. Awards covered fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, and club displays amid a first-time venue in the industrial hall.

C N R Division Engineer R C Robinson Retires in Dauphin

Roy Clifton Robanson retires after 31 years as CN R division engineer in Dauphin. He turns 63, plans to stay in Dauphin with winters in the south, and was honored by colleagues with a Gladstone bag and a Hamilton wrist watch. Continued on page 46.

District Winners Named in Veterans Land Act Contests

District competition results under the Veterans' Land Act were announced with top prize of 20 dollars for best developed small holding in the Lansdowne Park subdivision going to D. M. Johnston in Winnipeg. Adolph Gniazdoski won sixth prize among non-sub-division holdings in Manitoba. Norcross will judge the Dominion-wide sub-division contest with a top prize of 50 dollars in trees, shrubs and equipment. The Dauphin area has 42 small holdings. Manitoba totals over 1,100 holdings. national prize fund totals 9,000 dollars.

Garland Man Dies In Barn Fire

The body of 64 year old John Bryga of the Garland district was found in his barn after a late night blaze. The log barn containing hay burned between 10 p.m. and midnight. R C M P and the district coroner investigated but an inquest was deemed unnecessary.

Large Area Board To Buy New Bus For South Route

Dauphin Ochre School Area No 1 plans purchase of a new bus with about 50 seats and 15 standing spaces to serve the south No 10 highway area to Riding Mountain park north gate. A special committee will finalize the purchase after reviewing three tenders and consulting experts. The old bus will be reassigned to the north highway route to bring 30 to 35 pupils to town schools.

Lower Reserving Project Clears 15000 Cubic Yards

Town engineer R S Everall reported to the council that 15000 cubic yards of material have been removed from the lower reservoir since July 2 using a new dragscraper and hoist. The estimated cost to Aug 15 was 2015.90, about half paid for by savings from excavation.

Dauphin Council Passes Health and Parking By-Laws

The Dauphin town council adopted a by-law banning sale of milk and cream unless cattle are certified free of Bang’s disease and tuberculosis. A second by-law restricts parking on Second Avenue N.E. to parallel spots with immediate effect and penalties for violators. The meeting also advanced plans for outdoor privy standards, dog license enforcement, old age pension questions, hall rental rates, and town hall painting. Delivery of a new fire truck was awaited with a target of August 15.

Ethelbert Youth Burned In Gas Tank Explosion

Victor Kuby an 18 year old from Ethelbert was severely burned on the face arms and chest when the gas tank of his car exploded after a stalled vehicle was struck on the highway four miles north of Ethelbert He was admitted to Ethelbert hospital in fair condition per the report of his parents Mr and Mrs Nicholas Ruby
