Rotary members and guests gathered at Silversands beach on Lake Dauphin to dedicate a youth camp. President Walter Fordyce announced plans started two years ago and noted it would serve multiple youth groups with a central hall, tents, and expanded beach and grounds with ongoing volunteer work and support from local firms and farmers.

Revamp of Area School Board Okayed by Department
The Department of Education will draft amendments to orders in council to shrink the area board from ten to five members once separate resolutions are received from the two boards. A rural representative will join the four town trustees. Local boards approved a ninth month plan to add a rural trustee and require separate local resolutions. Delegates Geo Dowler William Swaine and Mrs L Hoy were chosen for the Progressive Conservative national convention in Manitoba next month.

Adam Weselowski a 34 year old Ukraina farmer died by drowning about noon Tuesday August 10 after suffering an epileptic seizure while drawing water from a well and sliding head first into the shaft found by his mother Mrs Barbara Weselowski He is survived by his widow Helen Gniazdoski of Sifton Funeral plans not yet set and no inquest will be held.

Weather notes slow harvest as town sees brief rain

Teachers Salaries May Be Adjusted in Manitoba Area

Coroners Jury Finds Accidental Death in Garland Child Shooting
A coroner's jury ruled the death of 3 year old Orycia Halerewich in Garland accidental from a .35 rifle fired by a small child on August 1 1948. The jury noted possible carelessness by the gun owner and held the inquest at Sneath's funeral home. Mike Prysiaznik of Fork River faces a charge under the Game and Fisheries Act for having a firearm in a vehicle.

Eggert Petersen Wins Isbister Scholarship
Eggert Petersen aged 15, son of Mr and Mrs Swaine Petersen of Pine River, formerly Dauphin, won an Isbister first scholarship. He will enter University of Manitoba pre med studies in autumn, receiving a 50 dollar cash award and 105 toward tuition. His brother David, 13, scored the province high IQ 170 in June Grade 9 tests. Both boys did foundation schooling in Dauphin. For two years they studied with principal D W Hnatiuk at Pine River one room high school. he will join Smith Jackson staff this year.
