Five Die In Head On Crash On U S 601 South Of Monroe
Five members of a Charlotte family died Saturday afternoon when their car collided head on with a pickup two miles south of Monroe on U S 601. Elissa Glover 49 Shirley Hudson 31 and Hudson daughters Sheila Redford 14 Angela Covington 10 and Elissa Covington 9 were killed. William Earl Hudson was hospitalized in critical condition. Phillips Hughes of Marshville driver of the truck was not seriously hurt. The state patrol said Hudsons car appeared to cross the center line. Traffic halted about an hour as rescuers cleared the scene. The weekend toll rose to nine on North Carolina highways with 1 066 deaths this year up from 1 137 at the same point last year. Additional fatalities included Derek Dixon Auten 5 Mount Holly died after darting into traffic. Bera Ellen Williams 17 Elizabeth City died in a Pasquotank County crash near Elizabeth City. Hawthorn Tatum 51 was killed while walking east of Roseboro. A hit and run driver struck him. Early Saturday Jack Hayes Noble 23 Belhaven died near Engelhard in a crash with a utility pole.
