President Carter and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmy held day long talks at the White House and State Department with Cyrus Vance. They offered cautious optimism on a Geneva peace conference but no firm progress. Fahmy said a conference would be possible with hard work and compromise while noting Egypt’s continued pivotal role in a negotiated settlement.

At least five people were injured when a gas explosion at Pier 43 near Fisherman's Wharf ignited a two story building. Firefighters with Coast Guard support battled the blaze for about 90 minutes as work crews shut off a gas main. The cause was not immediately known and injured workers included utility staff from Pacific Gas and Electric and a Crawley Maritime employee.
