Big Boost In Pipeline Costs Predicted

Energy Secretary James Schlesinger warned the Alaska gas pipeline could cost 13 to 14 billion dollars, up 2.37 percent from 9.6 billion. He said U.S. consumers would pay about 2.50 per thousand cubic feet, with Canada supplying Midland markets by 1980 and California and the Midwest by 1982 or 1983. A joint U.S.-Canada agreement promises prices 15 percent below earlier proposals, with Congress and Canada approving new legislation before construction begins.
